Quote:
The Young Victoria is a 2009 period drama film based on the early life and reign of Queen Victoria, and her marriage to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The film was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and written by screenwriter Julian Fellowes. Graham King, Martin Scorsese, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and Tim Headington served as the film's producers. The film starred Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson, and Jim Broadbent among a large ensemble cast.

Fellowes sought to make the film as historically accurate as possible. With this in mind, he hired Academy Award-winning costume designer Sandy Powell and historical consultant Alastair Bruce, 5th Baron Aberdare. Filming for The Young Victoria took place at various historical landmarks in England to further the film's authenticity. Despite this, various aspects of the film have been criticized for historical inaccuracies.

Momentum Pictures released the film in the United Kingdom, where it appeared in theaters on 6 March 2009. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group opened The Young Victoria in limited theatrical release in the United States on 18 December 2009 through Apparition. Critical reception was generally positive, and it scored a 76 percent rating on film review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes based upon 139 reviews. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning the 2010 Academy Award for Best Costume Design. The film also won for the Best Make-Up and Hair and Best Costume Design at the 63rd British Academy Film Awards.

Thoroughly disappointing considering the subject matter at hand. No real buildup, it was a bit like reading a textbook. The acting was serviceable, if that. i try not to compare, but Blunt has nothing on Keira Knightly when it comes to period dramas. Costumes and cinematography were fantastic though. Should be a lock for some Oscar noms in those categories.

Yeah its a period film but its very short at 1hr and 40 mins and you would expect a rather compelling storyline for such a film.

The Reign of Queen Victoria was quite uneventful unlike Elizabeth the First, so that's why the film is rather dry. However some great side characters and nice sets.

Yes it was slight and I guess not that much happens - but the film is after all about The Young Victoria and her rise to the throne in which time she is pulled in all manner of directions by those looking to use her for their own needs. I thought Blunt did a fine job and the unlikely romance worked well for me.

Grade : B+

The Young Victoria is led by a pretty generic storyline that only works thanks to its cast. While it was a little bit hard to believe her character to be aged 18-21, Emily Blunt's performance as Victoria is absolutely wonderful and deserving of the Golden Globe nomination. She brings so much life to a rather dull dialogue that she is given. Rupert Friend also does great as Prince Albert and Jim Broadbent has good fun in his time on screen as King William. If the script was better, the film could of been miraculous but as such the film is still a good effort thanks to the cast and beautiful costume design. **1/2
