Micmacs à tire-larigot [Micmacs]
MicmacsQuote: Micmacs is a 2009 film by French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet that premiered on 15 September 2009 at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival as a gala screening at Roy Thompson Hall. Its original French title is Micmacs à tire-larigot, ('Non-stop madness'). The film is billed as a "satire on the world arms trade".

Re: Micmacs à tire-larigot [Micmacs]
Micmacs à tire-larigot is the latest film of French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet - - best known for Amélie, but also the cryingly underrated fourth Alien film: Resurrection, and then A Very Long Engagement, Delicatessen, and The City of Lost Children. Not the most prolific filmmaker, but that is a fine body of work...
...but truth be told, I don't even completely believe there is a "Jean-Pierre Jeunet".
[tinfoilhat] My personal conspiracy theory is that this movie was secretly co-directed by David Lynch, Terry Gilliam, and Tim Burton working from an unpublished script for the feature film reimagining of the Mission: Impossible TV series from the brief Nora Ephron & Stanley Kubrick collaboration of the late 80's. [/tinfoilhat]
Micmacs is a bizarroland action drama with a heart of comedy and just the tiniest soupçon of romance. Each of the principal actors is charming in their own distinct scruffy way. The settings and art direction are a superb mash-up homage to Dune, Brazil, and Edward Scissorhands. The story is pleasantly meandering in it's measured telling. It is a movie's movie - - chock full of film references, and a full-on paean to all it's honored ancestors while still carving out it's own new trail through the forest that is the future.
I came out of the theatre a convert to the Micmacs - - this is a film that will reward many, many viewings - - a newborn masterpiece.
125 out of 5.

Okay, I can accept that no KJer's saw this in the theatre, but is it really possible that not one person here has eagerly sought out the DVD?!? And you call yourselves movie lovers. (Edit: I see that it is not out in Region 1 until December 14th - - so I'm going to cut those of you in the New World a little slack for a couple of months.)
