Quote:
Potiche is a 2010 French-Belgian comedy film directed by François Ozon, based on the play of the same name by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Grédy. It stars Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu, Fabrice Luchini, Karin Viard, Judith Godrèche and Jérémie Renier. Set in 1977, the film tells the story of a submissive wife who gets to run her husband's umbrella factory, after the employees rebel against their tyrannical manager. In French, a "potiche" is a decorative vase, but also roughly means the same thing as "trophy wife". It competed at the 67th Venice International Film Festival.

Post Re: Potiche
Now here's one wacked out, hyper-stylized, retro throwback that is so splendidly crafted that it rocks your smock off.

With the shining centerpiece of none other than acting royalty Catherine Deneuve, Potiche ends up being the proto-grrrrrlll power story - - or I should say... proto-potttttiiicchhhe!

Anyone with a basic love for French cinema of the past 50 years will groove on the many memories this film stimulates.

Though some may dismiss it as a Gallic Made in Dagenham, Potiche really does carve out it's own special niche, not too mention that it is frequently laugh out loud funny.

Highly recommended.

25 out of 5.

Spoiler: show
{I was trying to imagine who would star in an American or British version of Potiche - - but I couldn't imagine the director capturing the effervescent tone of the original. The most recent film that got it was Hairspray.}
