It hits a lot of the usual Cronenberg notes - homoeroticism, bodily transformation - but it never really captures interest or rises above its concept. Irons and Lone are terrific, but the story is kind of a waste. It uses time ellipses but never really makes it clear; twenty years pass before you even realize it. Eventually, you're just waiting for it to end. Probably the worst Cronenberg I've seen (which is basically all of them).
