Re: Spellbound (2002)
Loved it. More than the Bee - It's about the psychi of high IQ kids. All are social misfits who are unable to buy into their peers' life. They're glad to be smart, but there is a hint of lonliness underneath. Not unlike a superhero.
They obsess over the Bee to feel special - Whereas I suspect the rest of the world makes them feel very unspecial and longing for relevance. Longing for conversations they can't have.
What I love is the film didn't have to tell us any of this. It didn't have to say anything itself, all footage is the people themselves.
Just an excellently put together, paced doc. Makes us love the 8 kids, with an underbelly of sadness. My favorite was April, the most Bee obsessed and also most unsure of herself.
The words for each of the kids is riveting - you don't want them to get out early after the work they've put in. The Indian kid especially. Imagining his crazy stage dad's reaction to an early exit during his first couple words is terrifying. When a doc makes you feel like that, it's done its job.
Probably one of my favorite docs. Great stuff.

Re: Spellbound (2002)
I wonder about how high achievers are often young misfits. I've always assumed the creativity/ intelligence which led to achievement also led to their lack of fit. But maybe their lack of fit pushes the obsessive effort needed to achieve. Cause without acceptance out there helping them feel special, they create it themselves. In particular almost all artists have an ego and need for people to praise them. No wonder it's the unconfident, socially frustrated kids who need to create art, not the confident socialites

I guess most times it is the former, sometimes the latter and often both.
