Quote:
Bande à part (French pronunciation: [bɑ̃d a paʁ]) is a 1964 Nouvelle vague film directed by Jean-Luc Godard. It was released as Band of Outsiders in North America; its French title derives from the phrase faire bande à part, which means "to do something apart from the group."

The film is an adaptation of the novel Fools' Gold (Doubleday Crime Club, 1958) by American author Dolores Hitchens (1907–1973).

The film belongs to the French New Wave movement. Godard described it as "Alice in Wonderland meets Franz Kafka".

It's pretty hit-and-miss until the tragic third act, which is a perfect contrast to the fluffiness which preceded it. The opening two acts set up the finale well, but they're punctuated by a lot of silly moments, banal dialogue, and a romance that seems tacked on. Of course, there's also the fantastically fun, too-cool-for-school dance scene, which is practically impossible not to smile at. And then that ending: dark, violent, shocking, and utterly brilliant. It's only because of the lightness before that makes it so effective, which makes the earlier silliness easier to overlook. Godard's direction is pretty standard here - no jump cuts, no extra-diegetic sound, no flashy camera tricks - but his skill is never in question. The use of long takes, wide shots, and extreme angles is perfect. It's a solid New Wave flick, but certainly not as innovative or even entertaining as Breathless.

Pretty much agree with what trixster said. Uneven; partly inspiring and partly dragged. The dance scene is definitely the highlight, and the final act is absorbing, but overall not nearly as exhilarating as Breathless. B.

(And I finally know where the running-through-Louvre scene in The Dreamers came from)
