Re: Brooklyn's Finest
Brooklyn's Finest is actually a good cop crime film thanks mostly to some solid performances. The three stories that play out here between Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, and Don Cheadle are all gripping with Cheadle's story taking the lead over them all. While it may not be Oscar-worthy, Cheadle does show his great acting chops here again given the darkness of what his character does, being an undercover cop in the drug and crime of Brooklyn's streets. Wesley Snipes is strong enough beside him but could of used more screentime. Hawke pulls a solid enough performance as well though he does seem a bit whiny in the last third. Gere does all he can with his story but if it wasn't for his side's strong third act, the story could of been used without as it was a typical "cop in his last few days on the job" plot. The film does spend some good time building up the character's personalities and lives and that makes the last 15-20 minutes kind of hard to watch. The grimness of the city life is there and the film does pull the viewer through some truly gruesome scenes and is one of the hardest films to watch so far this year. It isn't one of the best cop films out there but despite its flaws in some parts it comes away succeeding what it set out to do. **1/2
