Quote:
Me and Orson Welles is a 2009 period-drama film directed by Richard Linklater and starring Zac Efron, Christian McKay, and Claire Danes. Based on Robert Kaplow's novel of the same name, the story, set in 1937 New York, tells of a teenager hired to perform in Orson Welles' stage production of Julius Caesar, where he becomes attracted to a career-driven production assistant.

The film was shot in the Isle of Man, London, and New York in February, March, and April 2008, and was released in the United States on November 25, 2009 and the United Kingdom on December 4, 2009.

Shame on whoever thought told Linklater this had to be a vehicle for Zac Efron. But the blame can't rest entirely on Efron - Richard Linklater is batting well below par here. Me and Orson Welles is dramatically inert, with precious little besides Christian McKay's confident performance to make it worthwhile. Choosing to focus on the single week a boy encounters Welles just before he exploded might sound good on paper, but it was really hard to muster any interest towards Efron's smug character.

Seeing this immediately after The Road was a bad idea.

Christian McKay is gold in this.

Efron was just fine in this. Charming even. I liked him well enough. The movie was decent enough. Nothing special, but not bad.

6/10 (B-)
