Bright Star
Bright StarQuote: Bright Star is a 2009 film based on the last three years of the life of poet John Keats and his romantic relationship with Fanny Brawne. It stars Ben Whishaw as Keats and Abbie Cornish as Fanny. A British/Australian/French co-production, it was directed by Jane Campion, who wrote the screenplay and was inspired by the biography of Keats by Andrew Motion, who served as a script consultant on the film. The film competed in the main competition at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, and was first shown to the public on 15 May 2009. The film's title is a reference to a sonnet by Keats named "Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art", which he wrote while he was with Brawne.

Re: Bright Star
It's terrific. Campion is, appropriately enough, making visual poetry here; tall grass, flowing curtains, Brawne's gorgeous costumes, and bedrooms full of butterflies combine with thoughtful editing that masterfully communicates the change of seasons. It's a grand evocation of life's small joys, and of its tenuousness. It's lyrical and delicate and completely captivating. Keats and Brawne are frequently forced to communicate through written prose; you'll never believe how cinematic that can be in the right hands.
Abbie Cornish may be giving the performance of the year, here.
Watch it now, before the dreadful college hipster poetry/lit nerd girls find this on DVD and you feel guilty for liking it so much.

Re: Bright Star
What did you think of The Piano, especially compared to this?

Re: Bright Star
I barely remember The Piano, which I saw at a too-young age, so I am reluctant to comment.
Not that one is ever old enough to see Harvey Keitel's penis. Right, Lorraine Bracco?!

Funny, I don't remember much of Keitel's penis, but I do remember mucho mucho Holly Hunter nudity.

This seems wonderful. I'm hoping it expands here soon (this upcoming weekend would be nice).

Re: Bright Star
Bright Star is a wonderful period piece held up greatly by Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish's performances. Jane Campion captures the romance beautifully and puts it in a wonderful backdrop thanks to great cinematography and amazing costume design. Seriously why is this getting snubbed of tech noms? The plot is not the best romance piece out there as it does hit a couple rough patchs along the way but in the end thanks to everything else it works. Hopefully the Oscars can notice this film and give it some noms. ***1/2

Re: Bright Star
Wow.. I never posted my thoughts on this? I saw it twice in theaters and bought the DVD last night. It was beautiful in every way. I don't know if this or AN EDUCATION is my favorite movie of '09.
10/10 (A+)
