Dead Poets Society
Dead Poets SocietyQuote: Dead Poets Society is a 1989 drama film starring Robin Williams and directed by Peter Weir. Set at a conservative and aristocratic boys prep school, it tells the story of an English teacher who inspires his students to change their lives of conformity through his teaching of poetry and literature.
The story is set at the fictional Welton Academy in Vermont in the 1950s, and was filmed at St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware. The script, written by Tom Schulman, is based on his life at Montgomery Bell Academy, an all-boys preparatory school in Nashville, Tennessee.

A bit overrated, IMO. It has some pretty good performances and I like the 'message' of the movie. B+

Always thought this one was a bit overrated. Robin Williams delivers one of the finest performances in his career and the movie is certainly uplifting and well-done, but it just couldn't inrigue me much because I always had a "been there/done that" feeling watching it.

I liked the film's take on transcendentalism, and I think Robin Williams is probably at his best here, but I always thought the end was just terrible. Totally unrealistic, poorly-paced, and the "Oh captain, my captain" scene is just cheesy beyond words.

Overrated, I'm afraid to say.

One of my favorites since I was younger. I don't mind the cheesy dialouge at times.. I guess it's one of those movies I've grown up loving.

Seen it again recently. Yeah, I still stand with my position. It is overrated. Williams is very good, but I didn't remember that he actually had so little screentime. He was borderline Supporting Actor in this, I'd say. Hawke is very good here too, but there are really so many cheesy things.

Re: Dead Poets Society
One of my favorite films. Robin Williams performs his role with great charisma and sensitivity. Expertly directed, as always, by Peter Weir. It and the 1951 adaptation of The Browning Version are the best among the sub-genre of teacher dramas.

Re: Dead Poets Society
After The World According to Garp and Good Morning Vietnam, not only did Williams solidify himself as a great comedian and leading actor, but here he proves he is an extremely talented actor. A role that has since been copied so many times to even self parody, Williams leads also one of the better ensemble of young actors. It's fun, charming, inspiring, and of course heart breaking at times. Just a wonderful film that may seem slower by today's standards, but it doesn't make it any less compelling.

Re: Dead Poets Society
This film is entertaining, despite some truly atrocious acting by the main kid who kills himself. I liked it a lot until they actually form the society, and then it is less interesting until the part with the play at the end. Certainly see why it would appeal to 80's babies though.
