The Gunfighter
The GunfighterQuote: The Gunfighter is a 1950 western film starring Gregory Peck, Helen Westcott, Millard Mitchell and Karl Malden (who came back after a three year hiatus). This film was directed by Henry King. It was written by screenwriters William Bowers and William Sellers, with an uncredited rewrite by writer and producer Nunnally Johnson, from a story by Bowers and screenwriter and director Andre de Toth.

Pretty fascinating Western that prefigures both High Noon and Unforgiven, in its real time-esque structure and fatigued gunman. Peck is pretty terrific as the nervous, fidgety titular hero, as he waits for the inevitable, and the story builds strongly while carrying some rather progressive ideas and themes. Though flawed in its character portrayals (the only reason the villain wasn't twirling his moustache was because he couldn't grow one), it's still one of the better Westerns I've seen.
