Re: The Lady from Shanghai
A rather by-the-book noir elevated by some intricate plotting, a great sense of humour, a brilliant finale, and that Wellesian touch. Though his Irish accent may not be entirely believable, he fulfills the role of passive hero well, and his direction is just as effective. The mockery of the courtroom scene is hilarious; countered with the surrealism of the hall of mirrors shootout, the film feels kinda perverse and subversive. The story is nearly incomprehensible, but it hardly matters; the mood is what's important. Not Welles' best (or even best noir), but still pretty good.
