Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Miracle on 34th StreetQuote: Miracle on 34th Street is a 1947 Christmas film written by George Seaton from a story by Valentine Davies, directed by George Seaton and starring Maureen O'Hara, John Payne, Natalie Wood and Edmund Gwenn. It is the story of what takes place in New York City following Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, as people are left wondering whether or not a department store Santa might be the real thing. Because of its Christmas theme, the film has become a perennial Christmas favorite.
The film won Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Edmund Gwenn), Best Writing, Original Story (Valentine Davies) and Best Writing, Screenplay. It was also nominated for Best Picture, losing to Gentleman's Agreement.
Davies also penned a short novella version of the tale, which was published by Harcourt Brace simultaneously with the film's release.

Re: Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
It's actually pretty subversive and clever, especially when compared to the candy-coated, sickly sweet remake. A lot more adult and mature than perhaps it's known or given credit for.
What I like most is that all of the characters - minus Kris Kringle himself - have rather dark and even perverse motivations for acting the way they do, and thus allowing the 'miracle' to happen. The lawyer just wants to get laid, the judge just wants to get re-elected, and the post office just wants to get rid of all of this junk clogging up their mail room. In a way, it paints a rather cynical and misanthropic portrait of human nature, one redeemed by the eternal goodness of Santa Claus.
It's also pretty funny, something I was definitely not expecting when I agreed to watch it with the fam.
So yeah, rather surprising.

Had you never seen it before? When I finally sat and watched it 3 or 4 years ago, I was floored by how smart and funny it really was.

Never before.
I'd always put off watching it with my fam because, well, it was one of my dad's favourite movies, and we all know how well our parents judge cinema. But I was rather pleasantly surprised. Dammit.

Not all that great. Solid but I think it's way overrated.
