This is probably my favourite DGG film to date.

It's basically his version of The Night of the Hunter, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. By combining the same kind of delirious fairy tale with his terrific penchant for characters and dialogue, he's crafted a brilliant metaphor of a movie, much like the Laughton film was. From the pitch-perfect, stylized opening credits right through to the dreamlike ending, it's a film constantly re-inventing and trying to one-up itself. The consistent use of freeze-frames give the proceedings a storybook quality, as do the wonderfully colourful figures and naturally poetic settings. Plus it's got great performances, beautiful camerawork, and a superb Philip Glass score. Basically everything in the film gels together to create a true masterpiece.

So yeah, I loved it.
