The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
The Boy in the Striped PyjamasQuote: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a 2008 drama based on the novel of the same name by Irish writer John Boyne. Directed by Mark Herman and produced by David Heyman, it stars Asa Butterfield, Jack Scanlon, David Thewlis, Vera Farmiga and Rupert Friend.
A Holocaust drama, the film explores the horror of a World War II extermination camp through the eyes of two eight-year-old boys, one the son of the camp's Nazi commandant, the other a Jewish inmate.

Re: The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Superb film, though extremely grim (of course). Both child stars, Asa Butterfield (as blue-eyed German Bruno) and Jack Scanlon (as imprisoned Jew Shmuel), are very natural. Great finds. The more experienced co-stars (David Thewlis and Vera Farmiga, Rupert Friend) are strong as well.
The third act is EXTREMELY disturbing, featuring many images I won't soon forget.

The ending is one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen in a film before. So incredibly devastating and hard to watch - I almost turned away.
Very good film though. Vera Farmiga's performance was fantastic, as were the ones turned in by the two leads. B+

THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS - 8/10 (A-)
An excellent film. The ending was fittingly devastating and tragic. I don't know where Entertainment Weekly got off giving this an F. In no way, shape, or form does it deserve that.

Re: The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
5/10 -> C-
It's a powerful movie but not on it's own right. It uses the Holocaust into it's own advantage. The imagery is disturbing, but again, if you know anything about history and you're at least a little compassionate human being, you'd find these images disturbing in any other movie/TV show.
The story is basically a fable imported into real events. A family moves into a new home, that's far away from anything. The young boy is bored and decides to explore. During his "exploration" he discovers a new world. Except the new world here is a labor camp. El laberinto del fauno follows the same basic footprint but it's faithful to the fable roots right up to the happy ending. But here there cannot be a happy ending, and it's very clear that this constructed story is almost an insult to the events it's trying to honor.
If there was only a little more understanding this would've been a great movie.
