I think maybe the alien-nature of North London to US viewers might make this movie more 'magical' as someone said, because films set in a different cultural background can always take on a removed meaning. Having been in North London fairly often, and having actually worked there for a while, I think i understand what 'realism' is in its context and this movie goes only as far as introducing the facade of realism without understanding its characters well enough to really commit to it.

Happy Go Lucky is about as realistic as Juno, which earned a few BAFTA noms.

It goes both ways across the Atlantic.

Yeah but the more and more i think about Juno, and basically after i saw it AWAKE i hated it.

I mean Jennifer Garner makes me WANT to like the movies shes in, but EVERYTHING about Juno is irritating bar her and janney.

Happy Go Lucky is just tosh really. I know it has a deeper subtext but its not a particularly groundbreaking or heart-warming one.

I like Poppy and her film. Sally Hawkins is, of course, enchanting. - 7/10.

I'm just a Mike Leigh fan through and through, I like his process. But I never thought during Happy Go Lucky that these characters are like my siblings and cousins in London. But realistic portrayal of Londoners are pretty rare.

They're either wizards (Potter), spies (007), somewhat retarded (Love Actually, Notting Hill, Shaun of the Dead), criminals (Guy Richie flms or imitators), or those with stiff upper lips (everything else).

I have seen it again. Can't decide who's better, Marsan or Hawkins.
