Post Re: Sex and the City
It has been four years since the incredibly popular HBO series "Sex and the City" has ended, and finally the film is debuting in theaters across the country. At last, many questions will be answered and fans of the show will rejoice, laugh, cry and cheer in the two and a half hours it takes to view the film in it's entirety. I'll be the first to admit this, I'm a bit obsessed with the TV show. Before a month ago, all I've seen from it are episodes here and there. I decided to give it a chance considering the movie was coming out, and I watched the entire series in a month, finishing it a day before the film's release. Like any fan of the film, I had high expectations and they were, for the most part, reached. Sarah Jessica Parker, like the TV show, is the heart and soul of the picture. She was wonderful, and a total joy to watch. If it wasn't for her horrible decisions with Aidan in the third and fourth seasons, she'd most definitely be my favorite character in the show and the film. Anyway, back on topic, she was wonderful and an absolute joy to watch. Her acting was spot on, and at times will bring you to tears. Especially during "the scene." Kim Cattrall, playing my favorite Sex girl, Samantha, was wonderful as always and was quite funny and of course, had quite a few laugh out loud one liners. Along with being my favorite girl, she also had the best storyline in the film. Cynthia Nixon was really good and definitely had a good storyline and one that made the audience gasp and cry, including myself. Kristin Davis was quite good as well, though her character was a bit wasted in the film. She was mainly used as comic relief but still had a chunk of dramatic material as well. There were some things she did in the film I just didn't think Charlotte had in her, and there is a moment where she gave a certain character a look, and let me tell you, if looks could kill, this character would have been dead in a heartbeat. It was so incredibly shocking coming from her character. It was great. Newcomer to the Sex world, Jennifer Hudson, does a good job with her role, though it doesn't call for much. It's really cute. There isn't much more to say about her. Chris Noth, as Big, a character I notoriously hated throughout the entire series, I actually really enjoyed here and I felt pretty bad for him at times. He finally won me over. The writing here was spot on as well, just like as any other episode of the show. And the costumes were fabulous too! I had a great time. It is a film that will please any fan of the series, and hopefully will attract some new viewers as well. I'll definitely be seeing it again.

9/10 (A-)

So I decided to delve into the world of "Sex". I just finished the first season and I'm not going to lie, it was pretty solid. It's not as secluding of the male demo as I thought it would be. It's basically soft core porn at some points but that isn't a bad thing. The good thing about this is us guys, especially those who are a little clueless about women can learn a thing or two from this.

Thoughts; I don't like Big/Carrie thing. Love Carrie. Love Samantha. Charlotte, eh. Miranda, great. Cinthia Nixon is pretty solid in her role. The threesome episode is probably the best of the first season.

I did as well. It had me and just about everyone else in tears. ;) I could not the look that Charlotte gave Big. It was PRICELESS.

When she yelled "NO!" my theater started clapping, as well when she finally told him off at the end.

Yeah, the same thing happened in my theater. That whole scene was probably my favorite part of the movie.

As someone who has never seen a full episode of the TV show, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Yes it's yet another example of a movie where you know exactly how it will end from the beginning, but it's about how it gets there and this ends up being a lot deeper than it appearance would suggest. One of the better romantic comedies in a while

I HATED all the product placement, though.

It did the show justice, and that's about all I was asking for. I mean, Sex and the City has never been Masterpiece Theater. Sarah Jessica Parker is just as wonderful as Carrie in the film as she was on the show (haters can suck it). Kim Cattrall is her usual hysterical self as Samantha (I loved the scene where she's waiting for Smith with the sushi all over her body), Cynthia Nixon brings considerable heart to Miranda like usual, and Kristin Davis invests Charlotte with her trademark optimism and reminded me why Charlotte was always my favorite of the four (although I did feel Charlotte did get the least material to work with in the film). Chris Noth is solid as Big, but I almost had a hard time warming to the end after what he did to Carrie. Jennifer Hudson is obviously not as good as she was in Dreamgirls, but her capable performance (although it's a brief role) is indicative of her talent. It was definitely too long, which was probably my biggest complaint, but as a fan of the show, this movie was a fun way to spend some more time with these beloved characters. B+

I shoved everything in my mouth, except Dante's dick!

Solid time at the movies for me. Too much montages and Apple, but chicks (and myself) dug it.

Saw it yesterday. Liked it more than the TV show, thought they dealt with it well, but there was a weird lack of interest in Charlottes storyline. I dont know why that was.

Carrie was not annoying at all in the movie, the whingy self-obsession only reared itself once or twice in two hours, which is unusual. A sign of better writing all round to be quite honest.

I wasn't aware of the storyline at all, and thats unusual for me going into a film, so i enjoyed the journey.

They really did well transfering the source material to the big screen and I think they worked hard to give it a payoff feeling for the fans. It functions very well for the big screen and If theres a Sex and the City 2 then I can guarantee it will be huge.

There was one scene where Pret-A-Manger bags were more prominent than the actors themselves.
And Starbucks.. Everywhere!

Not that im complaining, because i like Starbucks. But i hate Pret-a-manger.

Never seen a whoLe episode of the show, but was very curious (and it was a NYC fiLm) so I just tried to bring out the gayness in me. I reaLLy had fun, there were few-to-no duLL moments and I thought Samantha overshadowed Carrie in their scenes but CharLotte was the most beautifuL, as aLways. BTW, fans of the series here too, were dead crazy about it and 8 out of 10 were femaLes at my theater.

I thought the product placement was an integral part of the story to be honest. Labels & Love.

I think the movie did the show justice and like Libs said, thats all i asked for. I actually found Samantha's story far weaker than Charlotte's up until the end. I don't like how Carrie and Big story ended, it didn't feel natural.

I think the acting is rather solid here.

Overall, B.

Not too shabby. For being a male, I found this to be enjoyable. The acting was good, although it has a few flaws. The costumes were pleasing to the eye (in fact, this could be a legitamite contender for Best Costume Design at the Oscars). The weak spot was the length of the movie. They could have edited this by 20 minutes and it still would have made sense. Otherwise, I had fun with it.

Grade - B

Haven't even looked at this thread as I never even watched the show and don't have a desire to see.

But I must say that I have had plenty of girls tell me, between 20-35, that they saw and loved this movie.

One girl yesterday told me she was so mad as she considers herself, not a girly girl.....but she cried during this movie.

As a total newbie to Sex and the City, I actually sorta really loved it.

Wonderfully charming and brisk, great acting, great relationships, great comedy. Miranda was definitley my favorite, followed by Carrie... both of them are surely two of the most layered female film characters in years. It'd be so nice if Hollywood starting casting more female people like this instead of whatever bimbo Kate Hudson or Cameron Diaz are playing in their next films.

Samantha brought it as the comedic relief and showed some heart for her character as well (Btw... Kim Cattrell is the hottest 50+ EVER. Move over Priscilla Presely). I only didn't like Charlotte, she just seemed kind of like the one dimensional "loud girl!" among the group, I guess with already 2 hours 20 minutes they had to give someone the short stick, and Kristen Davis is the worst, so I guess it had to happen. JenHud was also pretty solid supporting role.

Also, I loved Miranda/Steve, I loved Samantha/Hollywood guy, I loved Carrie/Miranda, I loved Carrie/JenHud, Charlotte/bald guy didn't get much time but I liked it enough. I loved all that. I didn't love Big and the conclusion to his storyline. After the WONDERFUL way the Miranda/Steve thing wrapped up, Carrie/Big just seemed way too easy and conventional. Also, was it me, or was briefly freaking out a wedding and then getting out to say "Ok, I'm in again" only to get rejected totally not enough to get him treated as the satan of New York for a year? It was pretty funny how they all said they loved Steve even after he fucked someone else, but Big briefly freaks out a wedding and he's the devil ("I could kill Big!") Dunno. But for the record, I did like Steve a lot more than him too.

Overall though, great. Best movie so far this year.

4.5/5

If you had watched the show it was more acceptable because Steve is a complete nice guy throughout and never really does anything bad. While Carrie/Big break up every other episode.

To be fair that is one of the main ingredients for the show: fashion/merchandise and of sex and the city.

Horrid disaster. I hated the first and second season, but totally loved the rest. This movie should be shot in the head and then stomped to the ground.

After a brilliant summary (short and very effective) of the love stories thus far in the series I felt such a rush - YAY SatC is back!!!!! But that went down the drain pretty fast.

I hated the story (at the end it didn't do much for any of the characters except for Samantha, and I'll get back to that one later). And while I find that convenient plots that pop out and tie into the main storyline (like the one at the very beginning when the girls are in the bathroom and the random female talks about the woman that was thrown out on the streets) worked really good in the show because of the short running time, the movie was filled with these "incidents" and that made the plot too contrived in my opinion. After some time there was no normal progression in the story. Yes it worked superbly in the show, but this was a fucking theatrical. Someone should've told King that.

The Carrie/Big thing was standard. I would have personally switched their roles and let Carrie be the big mean.

Miranda was too weird even for Miranda. And Steve having an affair was just so random. I mean Steve... Having an affair? C'mon... Yeah it's all about sex, but I just don't buy that Steve would do that.

Charlotte lost much of her kookiness. She was still a comic relief, but at least before she actually tried to find the love and change herself which led her to comic stuff, but here it was also very random and totally unrelated to her as a character. Pooping in your pants after a little sip of Mexican water? Yeah it was funny, but it was more suitable for a Farelly bros movie.

And Samantha. My favorite of them all. The one I found had the best progress of character in the show. A woman so addicted to sex, so in control of it at first that slowly got tamed by sex itself and led to love... It was kinda poetic (much more than the bridge meeting for example). And what do they do. They fucking break her up with Smith and take her to the beginning.

But I do give credits to the four girls. They still have a great chemistry together and their characters were alive once more for (I presume) the last time. It was just in a universe I (unfortunately) didn't enjoy at all. :( :( :(

I hate picking on people's reviews but i think you misunderstood the show/movie. Samantha being in a relationship just does not work and has no meaning to her.

I think Steve slept with someone else because Miranda wasn't showing him any love and because Miranda is so cynical and stuck up, he doesn't communicate with her.

Charlotte pooping her pants incident actually helps to show what sort of character she is. Charlotte is all about looking classy and being prudish.
