I think the reason why this isn't getting the steller WOM it deserves is because it is a very light-hearted 80s adventure film admist an era where dark blockbusters are the new style.

I think because this film and Iron Man are different than that trend is the reason I like them so much as well.

How are dark blockbusters the new style?
Besides Batman...I don't think any of them really qualify as "dark"

Harry Potter...Casino Royale...The last Spider-Man (maybe even the second one)...Hell even the Pirates movies tried to be too serious at times.

And I guess I mean serious more than dark.

Well it depends on how you define dark. By looking over the past few years here are the films I could come up with as being dark blockbusters; Spider-Man 3 (debatable - supposed to be, but poorly done), Pirates 3, 300, The last couple of Harry Potter films, The Bourne series, Superman Returns, Casino Royale, The Da Vinci Code, Revenge of the Sith, War of the Worlds, and The Lord of the Rings.

I'm not quite sure how this compares to the '80s style of blockbusters, but I'd say there have been quite a few films that haven't been exactly upbeat / took themselves seriously.

I loved it! It's actually my second favorite film in the franchise after Last Crusade. It's just such a blast, filled with excitement and intrigue throughout. The performances are all pretty great, the direction is spectacular, the action sequences are top-notch. Everything really comes together for a totally satisfying moviegoing experience. It kind of loses its way in the final ten minutes or so, but this is sure to be one of the best, most entertaining films of the summer. A-

In fact when was the last 300m+ film that was fairly light-hearted and not a true family film. There was Transformers (which I didn't really like...at all) and then...what?

Did you carefully read my review? I conceded that the originals weren't realistic. Hell, I'm conceding that in the very paragraph you are quoting. My point is that even with these types of films there is such a thing as going too far. Try not to be such an ass.

Besides, that isn't my major gripe with the film. Not even close. Those two stars I gave it aren't because of believability problems.

I could care less about your opinion about the movie. It's your opinion, you're entitled to it. But your review clearly states that you found the stuff in this movie to be far less realistic than the stuff in the originals. And that is absolutely ridiculous. The old ones had just as unrealistic if not more unrealistic stunts.

No, it isn't ridiculous. It is far less realistic. But as I said, that isn't the main problem. It was merely an observation.

how about it's not getting stellar WOM because it sucks. So many things happen that are unexplained and just happen for the sake of happening. The cold war theme was really over like 15-20 years ago. silly plot. over the top stunts that really ask you to go way beyond suspension of disbelief. it was just so damn boooring.

Despite my lukewarm reaction, I have to say I'm happy the movie did so well this weekend. I'm even kind of warming up a bit to the film.

Watch again, and remember it is a 1980s adventure film where a guy can survive the rath of God by closing his eyes, and a man can kill a Nazi with a pen.

IJ is not realistic and is not suppose to be.

Its suppose to be fun with the wacky action scenes. It is suppose to make you laugh at people getting killed and make you go "what the hell is going ON"" wohhhh!!"

A strong B+ simply because of Shia labeouf's character. Doesn't take itself too seriously which I like, but some of it was so over the top it was almost laughable. My theatre seemed to love it, so I think the crowd reaction should be pretty positive.

To me it can only work in IJ.

You got a lot of those over the top stunts and CGI in Hp5, Spiderman 3 and AWE and it just awful.

They got that from the Bible. Looking at the ark would cause instant death (unless you were the high priest). It was kept covered up while being moved because of this. One time the ark was exposed slightly due to a bump on the road and a soldier who accidentally caught a glimpse of it dropped dead instantly. In the movie it was changed to not just looking at the ark but seeing what was inside. It was a change that made sense for cinematic reasons.

The scene with the pen wasn't that far fetched. Ink was shot in the Nazi's eye and he fell backwards to his death.

A little wacky and goofy yes, but nothing like what we saw in this film.

As I said it only works here as I remember in 300, when they had those "magicians" throwing Grenades, I was ready to walk out...

More over-the-top in the past films:

Jumping out of a building onto canvases to break one's fall (Temple of Doom)

Riding with a submarine underwater (Raiders)

Birds destroying a Nazi plane (Crusade)

Out mine carting stampeading flowing water (Temple of Doom)

Need I continue???

I never really cared for any of the Indy films so this one was pretty much on par with the others for me.

I didn't mind the alien stuff at all, but I found all the same stuff as everyone else mentioned to be way over the top (nuke/fridge, Mutt/monkeys, etc) but one thing especially got to me - the way everyone's clothes and hair kept instantly drying after every single time they got completely soaking wet. That bothered me.

I'd say it was a pretty okay B. The same as the other Indy movies.

It's Indy, bitch.

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The story is a bit predictable, and its nothing spectacular (unlike Last Crusade's plot), but damn this movie is fun. The jungle chase is one of the best (and longest!) action sequences I've ever seen, despite some bad-looking CGI monkeys. But a guy gets eaten alive by ants! And they fall down THREE waterfalls! The film is full of memorable moments, funny one-liners, extraordinary effects (the nuclear bomb and climax are especially jaw-dropping) and a great performance by Ford. Its the perfect summer blockbuster, so inmersed in its ridiculous story you can't help but go alone for the ride. And Blanchett kicks ass as the villain, she was very memorable despite a so-so death scene. She played the character in a so over-the-top way that I actually wanted her to succeed! She was awesome. The ending was wierd but cool, I liked how they shook things up with the aliens. They thankfully retained the fun essence of the first movies, and although the action/effects are much bigger scale, Indiana Jones never lost its heart, unlike the first two Star Wars prequels.

So because something is written to happen in the Bible, it makes it more realistic? Give me a freaking break. The possibility of life from other planets is a lot more plausible than the crap about the Covenant of the Ark. The Covenant of the Ark and the Holy Grail are as far fetched and unrealistic as you can get for Macguffins. Aliens is probably the most plausible one they have used so far in the series.
