Stage Beauty
Stage BeautyQuote: Stage Beauty is a 2004 British-American-German romantic period drama directed by Richard Eyre. The screenplay by Jeffrey Hatcher is based on his play Compleat Female Stage Beauty, which was inspired by references to 17th century actor Edward Kynaston made in the detailed private diary kept by Samuel Pepys.

Re: The Stage Beauty
B+
The movie was a small and very pleasant surprise. I had no expectations towards it whatsoever, but it turned out to be a very chraming, funny and sweet piece of cinema. Billy Crudup is excellent in the leading role and should have at least gotten a Golden Globe nom for it. Claire Danes can hold her own as well, even though her role isn't nearly as meaty as Crudup's. Another noteable appearance is certainly Rupert Everett as King Chrales II, he's a hoot in the role! Tom Wilkinson is sadly underused. Despite its period setting, the movie still comes across as fairly fresh since it uses pretty vulgar language and none of the period stuff. In fact, there are very few scenes outside of the theatre overall.
I thought the movie mixed comedy and period drama pretty well, even though the storyline between Ben Chaplin and Billy Crudup seemed a bit undevelped on the whole. I really liked the film, though and would recommend it to anyone. I'm pretty sure the grade could increase on repeat viewings.

Re: The Stage Beauty
The side of me that suffers from OCD is really bothered by the "The" in the title. I agree with Lecter. Also, Claire Danes is terrific B
