A sweet touching story of the love between a mother and son, and the current dilema of illegal immigrants who flock to this country in droves searching for a better life. Driven by strong performances (Alonso, del Castillo, & Derbez) and great (although poorly translated) dialoge its able to overcome its predictability and heavy handed political overtones. Under the Same Moon is an enjoyable film inspite of its shortcomings.

Grade B

Let's just talk about how fucking terrible this movie looks for a little bit.

I thought it looked awful as well. I saw the trailer before Juno and said I never wanted to see it. ;) But my mom wanted to see it, and it was playing right down the street, so I was just kind of dragged along. I'm really, really happy I went to see it.

The thought of seeing this goddamned trailer even one more time is enough to make me want to give Heath Ledger's pharmacist a call. Please....no more!

Seriously.

I've literally seen this fucking trailer in front of every "art house" movie I've been to in the past year or so.

It kinda reminded me of last year's Waitress.

It's a a film with quite a few cliches and shortcomings. One where you know exactly where it's heading from frame one. But the characters are so likable you'd have to have a heart of stone not to end up loving them. Well-acted all around.

For all the talk I heard about stereotyped white characters, I didn't really see it. There is the one employer who is essentially a caricature. But it didn't really bother me because plenty of people like that exist in real life, and the other couple Rosario works for seemed quite nice in the couple of scenes they had so I don't think the movie was trying to push an "all white people are bad" message that some complained about.

B+

Yeah, that trailer feels like it could be an SNL parody for cliche foreign/art films and marketing tactics. I can't recite the lines off the top of my head, but the first time I saw it I reacted with a "oh jeez, they didn't just use that TOO" after each one.

Excuse me, but I believe you fellas might be looking for the The Trailer Park thread on this.

This thread is for reviewing the actual movie...

I went to see this as part of an assingnment for the Spanish class I'm in, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The movie isn't as unbearably schmaltzy as the trailers suggest. Instead, it's a fairly heartwarming story of a boy's journey to be reunited with his mother. The movie suffers from predictability and occassional credability problems, but most of that is overcome by the heartfealt tone and the acting. Adrian Alonso is particularly impressive as the nine-year-old protagonist Carlitos, while Kate del Castillo and Eugenio Derbez are solid in supporting roles. Contrary to the suggestion of the trailer that ran with Juno, the vast majority of the dialogue is in Spanish (which is poorly translated in the subtitles at times). It's no masterpiece, but it is a delightful charmer worth seeking out.

Rating: 3 stars out of 4 (B/B+)
