Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom MenaceQuote: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is a 1999 American epic space opera film written and directed by George Lucas. It is the fourth film to be released in the Star Wars saga, as the first of a three-part prequel to the original Star Wars trilogy and the saga. The Phantom Menace was also Lucas' first product as a film director after 22 years, and only his fourth overall. The film follows the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi, who escort and protect Queen Amidala in traveling from the planet Naboo to the planet Coruscant in the hope of finding a peaceful end to a large-scale interplanetary trade dispute.
Along the way, their starship must stop for repairs, and it is landed on the planet Tatooine, where the Jedi encounter Anakin Skywalker, a young slave boy who seems to be unusually strong with nascent powers of The Force. Meanwhile, they must contend with the mysterious return of the Sith.
Lucas began production of this motion picture after he had concluded that the science of movie special effects had advanced to the level of what he wanted for his fourth film in the Saga. Its filming took place during 1997 at various locations including Leavesden Film Studios and the Tunisian desert. Its special effects included extensive use of computer-generated imagery (CGI), with some of its characters and its settings being completely computerized and not existing at all in the real world.
The Phantom Menace premiered in theaters on May 19, 1999, sixteen years after the 1983 premiere of the previous film in the saga, Return of the Jedi. The film's premiere was accompanied by extensive media coverage and great anticipation. Despite mixed reviews by critics, who tended to praise the visuals and action sequences but criticize the writing, characterization and acting, it grossed $924.3 million worldwide, making it the Star Wars film with the highest gross-income (unadjusted for inflation), the twelfth highest gross-income film of all time, and the highest-income film of 1999. It is also the seventh highest-income film of all time at the American box office. A 3D re-release was released on February 10, 2012, and has made the film an additional $22.5 million so far.

This movie (as well as AOTC) may have been disappointing quality wise, but they were necessary as a set-up for the awesomeness that is Episode II, which will more than make up for the poor quality of the other two prequels.
With that In mind, I can bear seeing Jar-Jar's annoying antics.

Amen, brother. Horrible movie that shows the original movies in a somewhat bad light!

The weakest of the series, by far, but it's still solid.

Good fun movie. The final fight sequence with Darth Maul is awesome.

No masterpiece, no train-wreck. The kid is annoying, but there are some really great sequence like the pod race or the Darth Maul fights. It was a little bit too kiddyish, but nevertheless fun. (B)

gets SO MUCH hatred just because of the hype that surrounded it. people went in expecting the original trilogy, but it has a completely different look and feel and it pissed people off. it's not quite up to par with the OT, but it's still a highly entertaining and fun addition to the Star Wars franchise.

This is a real odd one for me. If you removed Jar Jar Binks and the wrenching acting, you would have one of the best movies ever made, and one of the worst movies ever made.
The action was fantastic. The end duel with Maul is one of the best sword fights ever filmed. The pod race scene is one of the greatest race scenes ever filmed. But I said it countless times that what is killing these movies isn't neccessarily th bad acting, or the un-vintage feel, but Lucas's bad direction.
I give it a C+.

Can't put it into words. Absolutely brilliant. My second favorite movie only next to Lucas' 1977 grand epic.

Yes I am. I own most of the toys (almost all in fact) from the Original Trilogy that came out then. I have all the movies, I've seen Star Wars 1,000 times, The Empire Strikes Back 150 times, Return of the Jedi 150 times, Attack of the Clones 100 times and The Phantom Menace 200 times. In fact I am watching it right now on my computer.

Precisely. Fans watch the movie once every other months probably, and they know the movie to which the are devoted basically inside and out. That's a big fan.
You take fanboy to an almost sacriligous level.
And the fact that you have Aldaraan as your location, SWEp7 as your screen name, and a pic of Lucas with a caption claming him to be the greatest filmmaker ever as your signature does NOT help your credibility.
