It's solid, if flawed. At times it definitely pushes too hard. "We get it, the father is a man of rugged integrity and rare moral excellence in a city populated by nervous or indifferent white people and vicious, tattooed cholos." But Demian Bichir gives a strong and tender performance (he deserves his Screen Actors Guild best actor nomination), and the storyline--particularly the search for the stolen truck--is fairly compelling and tense.
