In all seriousness, do any of you find a movie like this racist? You could never make a movie about all white kids beating up on blacks academically.

I was on my way to see The Great Debaters, when I took a wrong turn in the bad part of town and accidentally went to the wrong theatre and saw The Master Debaters. It was on a double bill with The Cunning Linguists. They ended up being quite inspiring in their own way...

69 out of 5.

This was basically your standard inspirational/motivational/under-dog wins in the end sports as metaphore for life film. Nothing really new is brought to the table and I think Washington actually took a step backward in his maturation as a director. Overall this wasn't really a bad film, but it wasn't a good film either, it was average at best.

Yeah, maybe because it wouldn't make for an inspiring story. I'm not rushing out to see this because I've seen my fair share of movies about minorities proving themsleves in America, but to call this film racist is to overlook just how recently this was still a big, big issue.

Post Re: The Great Debaters
Well, tonight I finally took the right turn, and ended up at the theatre showing The Great Debaters...

It's a story seldom told in mainstream media, actually two stories - - the recent black history lesson, from a mere 75 years ago, and then there's the lesson of the power of debate (that's a weapon of mass creation ya don't want fallin' into the right brains!)...

I simply couldn't find fault with The Great Debaters.

It's a flawlessly told tale, marvellously directed, and outstandingly acted.

But unfortunately, I have to admit my own error now. By not seeing this movie in the calendar year it was released, I have mistakenly compiled my 2007 Top Ten List incorrectly. This film will now belatedly be placed in it's rightful place on that list. I hereby apologize to anyone affected by my misjudgement in this circumstance. (The corrected list will now appear below*...)

21 out of 5.

*Corrected 2007 Top Ten List:

Bradley Witherberry's 2007 Top Ten List:

#1 (tie) Hairspray
#1 (tie) The Water Horse
#3 - Juno

The other seven -- unordered:

The Invasion
The Last Legion
The Brothers Solomon
In the Shadow of the Moon
Shoot 'Em Up
The Great Debaters
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

(Heartbreakingly, The Heartbreak Kid has to move to #11 on my list... :( )
