Post Re: The Hottest State
I enjoyed this film. The novel was very important to me in high school (alongside the Oasis and Radiohead albums and the Tim Burton and Wes Anderson films). It's earnest, but in a very pleasant way. Hawke definitely has insight into youthful romance/idealism and the hard lessons often learned.

So seeing the film adaptation a year or so ago was a pleasant, nostalgic experience for me. Hawke's direction is loose and mostly unglamorous, but his passion shines through. And the cast he's assembled is strong; star Mark Webber has a perfect 'average schlub with an impressive record collection' quality.

It's a nice film. A bit middle-of-the-road, but who cares? You may recognize parts of your own coming-of-age in it, the cast is strong, and it goes down easy.

Should I read Hottest State or watch the movie first?
