Finally watched it, Shack...

...and I quite loved it. I'm in the same boat as Jon in that I knew very little about Dylan or his music going in, and while the film didn't necessarily answer all my questions, it intrigued me and moved me enough to make me want to find out more on my own. The non-narrative structure didn't bother me at all; instead, the meshing of six different storylines, each with their own distinctive visual style, painted a vivid portrait of Dylan that a conventional biopic simply wouldn't be able to. I'm not sure which section or performance was my favourite - Blanchett's is surely the centerpiece and also the most fun, but I also really dug Gere's with the surreal Halloween village - but there's no doubt that they all complement each other perfectly. Add into this the way Dylan's songs are integrated into and even portrayed throughout the film, as well as some beautiful cinematic allusions, and this is certainly one of the best films from last year. What a year that was.

Nice to hear! I also loved Gere's village... the dead girl + singing part especially.

I think one of my favorite scenes in the movie is the first introduction of the Robbie/Claire thing... not the montage (which would also rank among my favorites), but the part with her in the house before it. It mostly spends 3 minutes or so with her walking around the house, doing chores, etc., without any actual dialogue (except for Ledger's narration at the end) but the combination of the expression of her face in the perfect shots and the music backdropping it tell you everything about the character and that relationship that you need to know. And then throw in the montage after it, and then the first Jude segment right after that, and that's usually the part where I start muttering to myself how awesome this movie is.

I'm Not There

Pretentious fan wank. I couldn't make head nor tail of it, and I only recognised two songs. I'm not a Bob Dylan fan at all and I don't really care about the eras focused on. I mainly saw it for Bale but he's hardly in it. It's all Cate Blanchett and Heath Ledger. It goes on forever as well.
