 Cléo de 5 à 7 [Cleo from 5 to 7]
Cléo from 5 to 7 Quote: Cléo from 5 to 7 (French: Cléo de 5 à 7) is a 1962 Rive Gauche film by Agnès Varda. The story starts with a young singer, Florence "Cléo" Victoire, at 5PM June 21, as she waits until 7PM. The film is noted for its handling of several of the themes of existentialism, including discussions of mortality, the idea of despair, and leading a meaningful life. The film has a strong feminine viewpoint and raises questions about how women are perceived. The role of mirrors are prevalent to symbolize self-obsession.
The film includes cameos by Jean-Luc Godard, Anna Karina, Eddie Constantine and Jean-Claude Brialy as characters in the silent film Raoul shows Cleo and Dorothee, while composer Michel Legrand, who wrote the film's score, plays "Bob the pianist". It was entered into the 1962 Cannes Film Festival.

Though the title is a misnomer (it should actually be called Cléo from 5 to 6:30), the real time aspect of the film actually works pretty well. The development of the lead character is quite interesting to watch over the 90 minutes. Not to mention she's pretty easy on the eyes. Varda's direction is top-notch, as every shot is loaded with symbolism and metaphor, and the score is very memorable. The short musical number in the middle is quite powerful as well. But the acting, outside of Cléo herself, is very unimpressive, and the story takes a nosedive in the last fifteen minutes. The seemingly random structure of the film works up until she meets Antoine, at which point all the strong femininity which had built up is immediately discarded. Still, it's an interesting watch.

I just love when she freaks herself out while singing on the piano. That seems like the perfect way to show how out of synch she is with everything around her in a way that, well, makes it seem like she's still in a normal daily rythm. The song itself is quite good, too, actually.

I actually really like that it never went for that feminist 1-2 punch at the end. The only thing I knew about Varda going into this is that she's a she, and she was considered "Left Bank," so naturally, I assumed there would be some digging to do to find a relevant film under a mess of 60's radicalism, but the film's not that at all. It's not enough of an entity to be anything coherent really, it's just two hours in the life of a woman and anything to promote such ideology would have required a framework which this film can't fit in the sort of structure it takes on.
