Catwoman: Amped Camp!
I suppose it's difficult, if not impossible, for those of us living in the present day to bear witness to the birth of a new landmark of camp. Yet Catwoman is clearly camp borne whole upon the unsuspecting world of 2004. Catwoman won't even begin to be truly appreciated until well into the twentyteens (ie:2013-2019), and will thereafter grow in stature. By the year 2039, Catwoman (and it's future sequel) will be highly prized as the cream of the early millennial era of movies.
*Remember: Every negative review is a compliment to camp...
All of the elements of filmmaking have been herein fused into pure unalloyed campiness at a level undared by contemporary film. The willingness of the two lead actresses to play upon their star personas' is remarkable. The evidence of the bravery of the scriptwriters to transcend the bounds of simple narrative, and take it on up into the stratosphere of amped camp is ample. This, ladies and their partners, is the real deal - watch it and witness your future...
The appeal to two key underserved audience demographics (cat people and women) will ensure a modicum of success today, but the real future of Catwoman won't be seen until tomorrow...

Catwoman is tough to rate because it is one of those rare films that is so over the top terrible that is almost enjoyable to watch. It's almost as though the whole movie is a parody - like a really long SNL or Mad TV skit.
This movie has it all... crappy dialogue (especially the one-liners), horrid acting from Halle Berry, a horrendous costume (how do you screw up the catwoman costume?!?!?), and some down right ugly special effects that appear to be made by a mildly retarded 4th grader.
In the end it's fun - in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 kind of way. I'm pretty certain that Ed Wood isn't really dead and made this film under a different name.
I'll give it a D+ just for the entertainment value in its sheer stupidity.

Each year, corporate media selects a film (or films) to be the "movie-to-hate", then they apply the full force of their anti-hype to making it fail.
The reason they would do this? I think it's just marketing psychologists showing off - "Hey! We can make people believe anything! Yeah, usually we specialize in hypnotizing people to believe crappy products are great - but we can do just the opposite too. We control the somnambulent masses!" Other reasons, include making it easy for unskilled comedy writers to write jokes for late night TV, and of course, their ongoing terror of powerful women characters.
Catwoman was there 2004 showcase.

Catwoman
I just watched this again for the first time in a decade. I loved it then and I still like it now. It's a campy, slick, and fun superhero origin story. This is how they should be made. I reiterate again, there is nothing cool about dressing up in a black, leather costume and fighting crime at night. It is ridiculous! Films of heroes doing that should be cheesy!
My liking of this movie back in 2004 just shows how ahead of the curve I (and this film) was. A female AND black superhero film! Nobody liked it but me. This is what annoys me when people say Black Panther is the first major black superhero. He's not even close. You can forget Blade if you don't think he's mainstream enough. But it's fucking Catwoman! It's not that studios were racist and didn't want to make black/female-led superhero films. It's the public that wasn't ready. It took them until 2017 to support a diverse character. Studios gave them these characters as far back as 1998 but nobody cared enough to support them. Hence the long break.
Anyway, this is still a blast from start to finish. Sure, it's corny when she goes full-on cat diva. It's a lot of gesturing, posing, and acrobatics, but Halle Berry is just incredibly sexy as Catwoman (and incredibly gorgeous/cute as Patience Phillips), and her work colleague, Sally, is hilarious. Sharon Stone and Benjamin Bratt are weak, but Lambert Wilson hams up the boss role nicely. The script is of course a bit crappy ("cat got your tongue" as she pinches the henchman's tongue) but I kind of enjoy the cat puns, and the visual effects are hit and miss, but there are genuinely great shots in this film. And the resurrection scene is better than anything in Justice League. Catwoman is far superior to that film, which just proves that Warner Bros. and DC are getting worse, not better.
I went to see this back in 2004. I think twice. Both times it was just me and some crazy cat lady in the cinema.

I do somewhat agree with the black Superhero point of view though. You had Steel, Blade, and Spawn. The BP argument is WW all over again.

That's a great, classic clip.
But your post just shows how cowardly you really are. Anyone can ridicule someone for liking a film with a 9% Rotten Tomatoes score. Oh, how valiant you are.

Re: Catwoman
I'm surprised I never posted in here. I haven't seen the movie since the first week it hit DVD but I liked it then. Would give it a B. Always thought it was kind of underrated.
