Re: Le beau Serge [Handsome Serge]
Though it gets credit for being the first French New Wave film, I didn't think it had much in common with the other two I've watched from that movement. The story is pretty unremarkable and the direction, while solid, is a lot less stylish than Truffaut's or Godard's. There are moments of interest, but, on the whole, I was unimpressed. The end raises more questions than it answers, which I suppose fits in with the New Wave, but instead of being intrigued or fascinated, I was just bored. Still, it's competently made and the characters are developed well, but it's certainly not up to the standards of the films it influenced.
