It works because it's light, which was something I'd never expect from the commercials and that one trailer. You'd figure from the trailer that it would be a constant competition between Woodcock and Farley, but with the exception of ten minutes or so, the film isn't like that at all. It's actually kind of cheesily deep, with Farley trying to find his place and who he really is when he returns home. And in some bizzare way, it works. Don't ge me wrong, it's not a dramatic or anything, but it's a comedy that take itself midly seriously.

It's hardly perfect though. For a comedy, there is not one big laugh to be found. It's amusing and funny the entire way through, but there isn't anything that had me rolling on the aisles with laughter. Another thing that I wasn't a big fan of, is that it resorts to that scene where the good guy and the bad guy are in a public place where both are the center of attention, and the good guy thinks he has all this incriminating evidence against the bad guy that he plans to reveal to everyone, where it only ends up blowing up in his face. How many films have used this kind of scene? Give me something a little different. One more problem I had; there's a love interest for John, someone he knew in middle school who's now a teacher. They meet, they go on a date, she thinks he's too distracted with Woodcock and they break up. If you've ever seen a film, you know there's usually a fourth part to the equation and that's when they two get back together. Here, that happens, but if you aren't paying attention, you wouldn't notice it. The girlfriend magically reappears during the closing credits, when the family is celebrating Christmas. Okay, so I guess that means they're back together? What happened?

So, although the film does has it's problems, I liked it. Thornton gives another great "Bad Santa-esque" performance and Thomas is good as well. Sarandon sleepwalks through her role, but even at that she gives a decent performance. And, most importantly, it's funny.

Oh gawd, I hate going to the movies with my family.

I don't think I've ever seen a comedy greeted with such complete and utter stone cold silence in a relatively full auditorium before. And it's completely deserving. Anything that even toes the line of being remotely funny was given away in the trailer. Everyone involved here is clearly phoning it in, and you just feel embarrassed for them (and probably yourself).

Your theater was full? There were only four other people in my theater. Maybe that's why I liked it?

It wasn't full like a Friday night full, but it was pretty busy for a Sunday night. I'd say it was about 60-70% capacity. It was hard to tell though, what with no one making a sound throughout the movie.

I can't say the dead silence surprises me. :funny:

What a sloppy, unfunny story this film has!

What a waste of talent!

Mr. Woodcock is TERRIBLE.

MR. WOODCOCK - 5/10 (C-)

Another lame Billy Bob movie with the same dull, unfunny tone of SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS.

I really like Seann William Scott and I like Billy ob Thonrton. You'd think the two together would be a great comedic pairing. Nope. Sadly, a lot of talent is wasted here. There are several amusing scenes, but not a single really big laugh I was hoping for. Hell, even School of Scoundrels is a tad better than this. The very ending really ruined it for me too (espceially considering that Eoodcock just remains the asshole he has always been at the end). I wasn't bored and it wasn't but, but just painfully average.

What a pleasant suprise. Billy Bob Thornton and Seann William Scott were both great on screen. Billy pulled in alot of hilarious lines and it was just a very fun comedy.
