Quote:
Gremlins is a 1984 American horror comedy film directed by Joe Dante, released by Warner Bros. The film is about a young man who receives a strange creature called a mogwai as a pet, which then spawns other creatures who transform into small, destructive, evil monsters. It was followed by a sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, released in 1990. In contrast to the lighter sequel, the original Gremlins opts for more black comedy, which is balanced against a Christmas-time setting. Both films were the center of large merchandising campaigns.

Steven Spielberg was the film's executive producer and the screenplay was written by Chris Columbus. The film stars Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates, with Howie Mandel providing the voice of Gizmo, the mogwai. Gremlins was a commercial success and received positive reviews from critics. However, the film was also heavily criticized for some of its more violent sequences. In response to this, and to similar complaints about other films (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), Steven Spielberg suggested that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) reform its rating system, which it did within two months of the film's release.

Great horror comedy with an awesome premise. The Gremlins were funny and scary at the same time. Its a little dated today but its very fun. Spielberg produced awesome movies in the 80s.

A solid and enjoyable dark fairy tale, although it doesn't reach Burton's levels. They show it on TV every year during the Christmas holidays or around there, and I always try to watch it.

The movie is as classic as they get. I know this was released on the same weekend in the US as Ghostbusters...what a great time that must have been for moviegoers! You could out a gun to my head and I still would not be able to choose my favorite between these two flicks that pretty much define the words "great entertainment". Don't come here looking for some "deeper themes" or some philosophical pondering. Just lay back and enjoy this thrill ride. The young leads did their job well, but it's the Gremlins that make this film with their mischiveous deeds. I think the "smaller" scale of this film benefited it, seeing how it's a bit better than the much bigger Gremlins 2. It has the humor, the suspense and just the good, old-fashoined fun that is lacking in the majority of nowadays blockbusters.
