Schindler's List
Schindler's ListQuote: Schindler's List is a 1993 American film about Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved the lives of more than a thousand mostly Polish-Jewish refugees during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg, and based on the novel Schindler's Ark by Australian novelist Thomas Keneally. It stars Liam Neeson as Schindler, Ralph Fiennes as Schutzstaffel (SS)-officer Amon Göth, and Ben Kingsley as Schindler's Jewish accountant Itzhak Stern.
The film was a box office success and recipient of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Score, as well as numerous other awards (7 BAFTAs, 3 Golden Globes). In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked the film 8th on its list of the 100 best American films of all time (up one position from its 9th place listing on the 1998 list). It is considered among critics as one of the best films ever made.

One of the most emotional and THE most technically brilliant film EVER. Only the depressing subject matter keeps it from being my favourite movie of all time.
Schindler's List is above a rating. :mirrorbow:

My personal all-time number 3 movie. The most shocking and thought-provoking movie ever made. Terrific acting across the board, beautifully photographed in black and white and one of the few movies everyone should see. (A+)

Oops, did not see this thread in the thread archive.
I need to watch the rest of the film before I can grade it (I just need to watch the other side, or 1 more hour).

"Pretty good"? Wow...
I can honestly say you're the only person I've ever seen who didn't actually love this movie.
Maybe it's because I'm Jewish myself, but...no movie has ever made me feel like this one did.

I was floored when I first saw this film.
My mum is from Germany and her father was an SS officer.

technically perfect, ralph fiennes is phenomenal in his role as amon goeth, but the film can be overly sentimental at times (like schindlers unnecessary speech at the end), and in some scenes spielberg tries too hard to be inventive and playful, like the scene where the nazi soldier plays the piano, surrounded by chaos - i give it a B+

I'm a little in the middle of the grades so far. On the one hand, the movie is technically flawless. It's one of the best movies ever made, in terms of acting and all. I loved it, but my only problem was that it didn't affect me emotionally as much as I thought it would have, due to all the great things I had heard before watching it. To say that it didn't affect me at all is ridiculous, but I somehow expected a little more. I once heard that out of every movie ever made, this had the best chance of bringing you to tears. And though Hotel Rwanda didn't bring me to tears either, I was affected more by that than Schindler's List. I'm sure it was different for others, but that's just how I felt. I loved it, but it was missing a little something. Technically, though, it was perfect. For being perfect, it deserves a high grade, but it's not "top 10 of all time" worthy in my book, like it was for others.
A
In my top 100 for sure, though...

Nope. I've heard about it though. I've actually heard more positive things about The Pianist than I have about Schindler's List, for some reason. Is it any better?

I had a problem with the violence in the movie. I don't buy into the claim by many critics that it was necessary in order to convey the true brutality of what happened, and as a historical record etc. Subtlety is not Spielberg's strong point and it would have been better here.
So to me this is a well intentioned movie with lots of flaws. Obviously I respect the sentiments behind it and am glad for the awareness it has raised to that chapter in history, that part is great. But I think it could have been better if it had been made more subtley and with less explicitness. And with more dialogue. Frankly what surprised me most was the lack of drama, the lack of conversation in it.
I don't want to give it a grade because it's not really a quantifiable film to me. If I said B it would sound like I was brushing it off which Im not, and if I say A it will sound like I like it more than I do.

I need to rewatch Schindler's List, last time I saw it was about five years ago, but from what I remember, yes, I thought The Pianist was slightly better. It is easily one of my all-time 25 and one of the best films of the last five years. It deserved the Oscar in its year, it's simply amazing.

I'd give both a straight A, but if I go more it detail, it'd be 9/10 for Schindler's List and 9.5/10 for The Pianist.

THIS is a great film. Like most movies dealing with similar subject matter it can be a little ahrd to watch at times, but it's very powerful.
