Il conformista [The Conformist]
The ConformistQuote: The Conformist (Italian: Il conformista) (1970) is a political drama film directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. The screenplay was written by Bertolucci based on the novel The Conformist (1951) by Alberto Moravia. The film features Jean-Louis Trintignant and Stefania Sandrelli, among others.
The film was a co-production of Italian, French, and West German film companies.
Bertolucci makes use of the 1930s art and decor associated with the Fascist mentality and era: the middle-class drawing rooms and the huge halls of the ruling elite

I recently saw this for the first time. It's one of the great films and, without question, one of the premier visual experiences the movies have to offer. Bertolucci's direction is incredibly showy but, man, what a show. Wow.
Who requested this only to let it fall, ignored, into the archives? For shame.

Who requested this only to let it fall, ignored, into the archives? For shame. Probably me. I tend to do that a lot (I just like to have the thread there in case I DO want to comment, yknow?) and I love this film too. I actually just bought it within the past week (though it hasn't shown up yet). Look forward to rewatching it.

Ehh, it looks really nice, and I was actually interested in the main story of an assassin falling in love with his target's wife. If that was the movie I'd have been cool with it. This is more of a character study though, which works sometimes but not here cause I just did not care any time they flashed back to some previous experience that caused the main character to be the titular conformist.
