 The Outlaw Josey Wales The Outlaw Josey Wales Quote: The Outlaw Josey Wales is a 1976 American revisionist Western film set after the end of the American Civil War. It was directed by and starred Clint Eastwood (as the eponymous Josey Wales), with Chief Dan George, Sondra Locke, Sam Bottoms, and Geraldine Keams.
The film was adapted by Sonia Chernus and Philip Kaufman from the novel The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales (republished in 1975 as Gone to Texas) by Forrest Carter. In 1996, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly may just edge this in terms of outright quality but The Outlaw Josey Wales is still one hell of good Western and one I'll never tire of watching.
Eastwood's Wales mixes terminator-like efficiency with human heart to create a truly memorable character and the cadre of side characters like the old Indian and the former leader of Wales rebel gang shine thru any fears of 2D dimensional caricature.
It doesn't scrimp on the violence and the civil war commentary bubbles nicely under the surface.
I'd have this as Eastwood's 3rd best film ever. My top 5 would probably go like this
1. The Good the Bad and the Ugly
2. Dirty Harry
3. The Outlaw Josey Wales
4. High Plains Drifter
5. Magnum Force
Will I always enjoy the numerous shoot-outs, airtight story and sharp dialogue? "I Reckon So"

Re: The Outlaw Josey Wales I found it rather conventional and generic, and certainly not in the league of something like The Good the Bad and the Ugly or The Searchers or any of those other epic Westerns.
It's an enjoyable romp; little more. Clint did better before, and he would do better since. Though I do agree it was terrifically written.
