 Mimic
Mimic Quote: Mimic is an American science fiction horror film, with elements of a slasher film, released in 1997. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, the script was inspired by a short story of the same name by Donald A. Wollheim. Mimic, whose U.S. theatrical gross was $25 million, was followed by two direct-to-video sequels: Mimic 2 (2001) and Mimic 3: Sentinel (2003).
Although del Toro was unhappy with the film as released, it includes several examples of his most characteristic hallmarks. "I have a sort of a fetish for insects, clockwork, monsters, dark places, and unborn things," said del Toro, and this is evident in Mimic, where at times all are combined in long, brooding shots of dark, cluttered, muddy chaotic spaces. According to Alfonso Cuarón, del Toro's friend and colleague, "with Guillermo the shots are almost mathematical — everything is planned”.

 Re: Mimic
i really like this film, the first half is great. unfortunately it switches from atmosphere to action halfway through, and the auteur del toro has to step aside for your usual monster chases.

Yeah, Joseba is pretty right. There's an interesting idea and some cool creature designs, but it's unfortunately bogged down by some terribly choppy editing and an action-filled last act that seems to stretch on forever. It's too bad del Toro had to sacrifice his vision for the Weinsteins, but at least he's recognized as a visionary today.

Apparently del Toro's been talking about a director's cut of sorts for Mimic...

 Re: Mimic
Still one of my favorite creature features from the late 90's. This and The Relic are really underrated IMO, especially since both have some of my favorite creature designs ever. Love the practical effects on display here, although the CGI definitely doesn't hold up. I enjoy the cast in this as well with Charles Dutton being my favorite character of the bunch. Del Toro directed this with so much confidence and it saddens me that he pretty much disowns this movie.
He is just amazing when it comes to creating atmosphere and tension and the griminess and the nastiness of the NY sewers and alleys is something that still stands out in this movie.
