Quote:
Sullivan's Travels is a 1941 American comedy film written and directed by Preston Sturges. It is a satire about a movie director, played by Joel McCrea, who longs to make a socially relevant drama, but eventually learns that comedies are his more valuable contribution to society. The film features one of Veronica Lake's first leading roles. The title is a reference to Gulliver's Travels, the famous novel by satirist Jonathan Swift about another journey of self-discovery.

In 1990, Sullivan's Travels was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Entertaining flick that feels a little dated in its depiction of gender roles and homelessness, but manages to amuse nonetheless. Sharply written dialogue and good performances overcome the rather simplistic and almost boring story, but only for so long. The end drags on for too long, and the whole thing feels too contrived. Still, a decent flick to watch.

Ouch, trixster!

Not my favorite Sturges, but still a great comedy and one of Hollywood's best movies about itself. Audiences of the day must have been baffled by the odd mixture of humor and pathos. Deserves to be watched again and again.

Preston Sturges consistently managed to get away with things I can't imagine the censors permitting, and I have no idea how he pulled it off.

Smack dab in the middle of Preston Sturges' golden age - - Sullivan's Travels is yet another smart whirlwind of a film populated by many of his favorite stock players. A treat to be sure!
