Hey, how'd this one escape from the Foreign & Independent Film sub-forum? Anyways, here's a copy of my review from over there:

A cold, dark observation on the compromises inherent in the interface between civilization and bloodlust. Well written, stylishly directed, and solidly acted by some old pros - The Proposition is a Western's Western.
5 out of 5.

Like I said:
I think it's one of the most skillfully made films of last year -- and one of the biggest surprises for me.
The direction deserves awards. As does the cinematography. And score. And editing. (FYC!)
I was never a fan of the western, and even the much beloved revisioning, Unforgiven, didn't do anything for me, but consider me a fan if all those I haven't seen are in the same vein as this.
A very quiet, very violent, but ultimately lovely meditation on violence and loyalty.

Nick Cave clearly knows his stuff.
Highly enjoyable outback western and a true subversion of the genre.

A terrific contemporary, revisionist Western, one full of beauty and violence and brimming with thematic weight and depth. I truly love it a lot.
Ray Winstone is a beast here. It's too bad he embarrassed himself in Indy IV.

After everything I heard I thought i was going to love this one and blind bought it. It was okay at best, and most of the time I found myself really bored. C+

I thought it was good. Great music, great cinematography, great performances.
It's a little slow going at times, but I forgive that.
****
2nd or 3rd best movie of last year.

Re: The Proposition
As an exercise in craft and mood, this was thrilling, haunting, skillful moviemaking.
Danny Huston's come a long fucking way.
