I actually enjoyed this one a lot. It's one of the year's better horror films and certainly better than similar films of its type such as the overrated Hostel. It was incredibly well-shot and quite intense at times as well. Plus I actually felt something for the characters and thought the actors did respectable jobs. An entertaining guilty pleasure.

B+

It's alright. Through the first hour, it's actually really good. The set up to the house where they're tortured is interesting and different, but I guess it's kind of false-advertised. There's, like, one scene that is kinda sick, but nothing I've never seen before, and the rest is rather boring, to be honest. Not terrible, not that good. C

I knew there had to be a reason why Yoshue posted in the Turistas thread.

Hahaha, I was just about to say that. Shack, it's cool if you want to check out all these movies that impress people (intentionally or not; I'm guessing you actually do like to check out older movies, which is cool, but it just happens to be approved of by some...) who think, "If you don't want (insert movie), you have no taste in films," but I've already been through that and realized that it's not worth it. I'd rather be entertained for 90 minutes watching Van Wilder II (which you did watch, heh) than sit through Chicago, have a miserable time watching it, just to get in Yoshue's good graces. No thanks. An Oscar nomination means nothing to me. If there's a quality film that just happens to be entertaining at the same time (i.e. The Departed, Zodiac, Inside Man, Blood Diamond...), I'm first in line.

And it's not that I don't take people's recommendations - I've discovered GREAT, GREAT films through certain people's recommendations. But our tastes are vastly different, I think. Just trying to save you some time.

It'll be on DVD soon. I swear I'll watch it. It only took me three years to get to it.

I was pretty much kidding around with my comment, but anyways, I think even you know that coming in there was no chance Turistas or Open Water 2 would be anything more than over-glorified DTV horror, or actual DTV horror... my point is that there's time better spent than renting movies you know are going to be average or crappy... was there any inclination that Turistas or OW2 would be anything better than a B- grade at best? My taste is weird, I'm not trying to impress anyone, but still... I think there's such a wide wide repetoire of movies out there so large that any movie fan could not get to them all, spending time with ambition-less forgettable films like Turistas is just throwing away film watching time. Like, how good could Turistas possibly be? Passable at best most likely. If you're someone who digs these cheap films, sure, but I know from reading your reviews you mostly give them average grades, so what's the point. Maybe you get more enjoyment out of these cheap throwaways than your grades represent, but anyways.

I'm sorry but that is bullshit, by that criteria Dog Soldiers (which was DTV in North America) would be shit, or the vast majority of J horror as well.

Dog Soldiers is one thing, Turistas or Open Water 2 is another entirely... it doesn't take a viewing to know the movie is probably going to be average.

Point is that Zingaling knew full well coming in that it probably wasn't going to be a valuable movie, and in the past unlike a Joe who digs these DTVs, he doesn't exactly give these films flying raves. Weird taste and my or bradley's tastes on movies like FGF is one thing, repeatingly seeing bad movies you know you won't like any more than passable-ly at best is another. Zing usually likes good movies, and dislikes bad ones... All his decision of course, but whatever. End of my blabbering.

I actually liked this movie a lot and I believe I have pretty good taste  . It was much better than the disgusting, overrated Hostel.

I see your point, Shack. And you're right, I do waste time with a lot of films that I know I'm not going to like. Turistas is not one of them, I actually thought it looked really good. I'm now glad I didn't see it in theaters, of course, but it had potential. And you're right that I do give generally average or bad grades to "bad" films. It's not like I avoid good ones, though. Just... I'm more in for the entertainment and less for the other things. Then, there are these so-called "quality" films that I'm sure are made well, but I'll never watch. Chicago is one of them. I do like Hitchcock, from what I've seen, so I should make a better effort to see those instead of wasting my time with Van Wilder II (which blows, by the way).

You have just climbed up many notches on my favorites scale! :)

Best Asian horror I've ever seen.

Oh and I know several decent-to-good DTV films.

Yeah, sorry if it seemed I was getting snobby in your face or anything by the way... twas just a poke at your strange movie watching habits. :)

I think you would really like Platoon, City of God, Princess Bride... first 2 have their share of bloody action and excitement, they are movies that'd appeal to you, I'd think. Bride is just extremely witty and quotable and lovable. Chicago is just a B grade musical for me, though I think you'd personally like it.

It was Hostel with less tits and less gore. So, yeah, lamezor. But it taught me that if you're in a foreign country and someone asks how many brothers and sisters you have, you make it seem like you're from Kentucky where you have 9 brothers and 6 sisters.

Wal-Mart is selling Turistas for $28.43, which is incredibly expensive by their standards. Most new releases range from $21 to $25. I got Casino Royale 2-Discs with Special Edition Playing Cards and Poker Chip for $28. I'm guessing Turistas comes with shitty artwork and a recommendation from a critic that nobody heard of that deems Turistas "One of the scariest movies you'll ever see!".
