Mad Max
Mad MaxQuote: Mad Max is a 1979 Australian dystopian action film directed by George Miller and written by Miller and Byron Kennedy. The film stars Mel Gibson, who was unknown at the time. Its narrative based around the traditional western genre, Mad Max tells a story of breakdown of society, love and revenge. It became a top-grossing Australian film and has been credited for further opening up the global market to Australian New Wave films. The film was also notable for being the first Australian film to be shot with a widescreen anamorphic lens.
The first film in the franchise, Mad Max spawned sequels Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985. The fourth film in the series, tentatively titled Mad Max 4: Fury Road is in pre-production.

Mad Max - B
Sequel is better, but this is an amazing film also. Gibson is "too" cool in this, it kinda makes him look fake, but i like it.

I love Mad Max and how it paved the way for future apocalyptic movies like 12 Monkeys,Terminator and Matrix. Obviously low budgetted and Mel Gibson use to do all his crazy stunts
Its not the best Mad Max(Road Warriors is followed by thunderdome)
Its still worth checking out

I am watching this now. I agree it may not be equal to the 2nd one especially but the first 30 minutes starts off pretty cool with some good action on the highway.

Actually La Jette inspired 12 Monkeys and the Terminator. It was a french experimental film that was all in still photos except for one shot.

Re: Mad Max
I saw this when I was a kid and remember not liking it. But after loving Fury Road I've been re-watching the series. Honestly, the original is not very good. It's hard to watch this again when it's so different than the other Mad Max films. I thought the first half was absolutely awful and was about to shut it off but then came the scene where his wife went to get ice cream and was attacked and it finally got interesting. The rest of the movie is pretty good. I don't think I ever did see Beyond Thunderdome so I'll have to watch that next but I think the original might be the worst of the series unless Thunderdome is terrible. Both Road Warrior and Fury Road are superb.

Re: Mad Max
This is still my favorite Mad Max film, as great as Fury Road is.

Re: Mad Max
I watched this series for the first time a few years back and caught it again over the weekend due to lockdown. This is such a great film though the finale finishes so quickly and the setup before that is slightly longer than required (IMO). The emotional scenes aren't handled well here.

Re: Mad Max
The Road Warrior is my favorite film in this franchise, but this is a pretty damn solid flick on its own. A really different change of pace compared to the sequels to come, although it is a much slower film than the rest I do enjoy the build up aspect.

Re: Mad Max
This has always been a favorite of mine and I just re-watched it again. It remains a great film that must have even felt grander at the time when there was less product around. It makes the most of a basic budget, is very slickly filmed, excellent score and has real kick to it. The films is helped by a charismatic lead in Gibson, even though he doesn't own that much screen time in it. The villains are zany and hateable too, its memorable all around and deservedly has gotten sequels.
