Re: La fille du puisatier [The Well-Digger's Daughter] (2011 An intimate, pastoral, and old-fashioned gem of a film directed by French actor Daniel Auteuil, known best stateside for his lead performance in Caché. The plot, focused on the title character's rural coming-of-age after an erotic encounter with a rich suitor, unfolds as a gentler, optimistic variation on Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. The performances are strong. The storyline, with its romantic twists and turns and vision of social division in World War I era France, is engaging and touching. And the bright, lush locations in the south of France are an undeniable treat to behold.
