Psycho II is the 1983 sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. It stars Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, Robert Loggia and Meg Tilly. The film was directed by Richard Franklin and written by Tom Holland. The original music score was composed by Jerry Goldsmith.
It is unrelated to the 1982 novel of the same name by Robert Bloch, which he wrote as a sequel to his original novel Psycho.
The film did well financially (leading to two further sequels) and moderately well critically. Several critics noted that the film worked hard to sustain the suspenseful atmosphere of the original. Inevitably, it was seen lacking the unique Hitchcock touch, with the plot weakened by the contrivance of leaving the door open for further sequels.

Re: Psycho II
What a surprisingly awesome film. I held off on checking out the psycho sequels for a while. The remake was god awful, so I didn't want the original to be tarnished especially with Anthony Perkins returning and 22 years of wait and change in horror cinema that the orignal helped create. But my god this is a great companion piece to the original. It's a well thought out thriller that thankfully didn't not adapt the novel of the same name. There are twists and turns and you really feel bad for Norman Bates in this one, you know what he's done and what he's capable of, but he comes off more tragic here than in the original, Anthony Perkins was even better in my opinion. It's obviously not as scary as the orignal, but it is tense with a great atmosphere for the entire film. There's a little bit of unnecessary 80s slasher violence in there, but I think any fan of the original should not only check this out, but would be very surprised out how much it doesn't suck. It could very well be the best horror sequel ever made. A
PS, the trailer is so dam good for a 1983 film, very effective. I can see why it would adjust to almost 100 million today (Usually the trailer is linked above, but here you are)

B+
Very underrated due to the fact that it's, you know, Psycho II. A great performance from Perkins, very Hitchcockian direction, and a really clever twist at the end. My only real complaint is the rather excessive and unnecessary use of 80s gore in a couple shots.

Agree completely with the two posters above: A surprisingly very good sequel to a classic that isn't just a rehash of the first movie.
The director, Richard Franklin, that died 4 years ago, has two other horror/thrillers that you should check out, PATRICK and ROAD GAMES, especially the second one.
