Weird that I brought this topic back up to comment, and I'm the last person who posted here! :zonks:

After watching it last night (I'll confess, the last hour, not the whole thing) I think I like it a whole lot more, but I'll have to rewatch the ENTIRE film and get back to this.

Too dull in some parts and the acting wasn't that good, but still enjoyable and mildly thought-provoking. I really enjoyed the scenery and the mystery adventure aspects of the film.

the good story came along with the novel, so it was enjoyable, but man oh man, this was one of the laziest films I've ever seen.

I think this was a great example of people kissing a respected actors arse (McKellen) for not a lot.

I call in the 'Judi Dench Syndrome' because Judi Dench (who is, of course, amazing) could literally turn up in a scene bit part in a blockbuster and people piss themselves at how great she is.

It's weird how people have it programmed into them to believe some actors are giving great performances when actually they are just schmoozing. Ian McKellen in this movie is a fine example.

Great, legendary actors can give mediocre performances and star in films where their presence adds not a lot. This is a great case in point.

I feel for Audrey Tautou watching this again - because she is a great little actress but she's given absolutely fuck twat to do thanks to poor scripting and weak directing.
