Even though I've always found this movie just a tad overrated, I had a blast seeing it with a great audience in the theaters! I haven't seen the movie in like four years, so I didn't remember too much about it, and that's a good thing. I forgot how campy and cheesy it is :p. Seriously, Nancy's mom is the funniest thing EVER in it. God, the crowd couldn't stop laughing. It was hilarious every time she'd pick up her liquor bottle.

Nancy's Dad: Keep her in the house until she gets over this shock.
Nancy's Mom: I got a better idea, I'm going to get her some help!

:D

What an awesome time at the movies! I really hope the re-issue of HALLOWEEN plays here. Oh, and another thing. The "Freddy's Best Kills" thing was really cool. Basically it was all of the kills he's done in all his movies, it lasted about a half hour long. It was after the credits. While it was cool, I don't feel the need to ever watch the other NIGHTMARE flicks (I've seen 1-4). They just seem completely stupid, and I don't think I'd like them too much. Some of the kills were hysterical though :). Again, great movie experience.

8/10 (B+)

Still think this is a cheesy movie, Halloween is far above it IMO.

Far too campy and cheesy for me to take it seriously as a classic horror film. Sure, the horror scenes are pretty effective and kinda scary, and Freddy Krueger is a great villain, but the rest of the movie just isn't well made at all. The writing is pretty crappy and the acting even more so - I really couldn't take the film seriously. It gets points for some cool death scenes and the dreamlike atmosphere, but this type of horror doesn't suit my tastes. Oh, and the ending had me shaking my head in confusion and disgust.

Ok, I'm going to sound like the pretentious, old fart here but I am always shocked when I hear comments like this. To say it isn't well made is very unfair. The atmosphere in this film is second to none. Here are just a few scenes that were innovtive, scry and just plain fucking cool:

When Nancy is sleeping and she dreams of Freddy coming through the wall.
The entire dream at the beginning with the goat.
Nancy dreaming about the boiler room and then culminating with "You're only a dream...GOD DAMN YOU!"
Tina's Death.
Heather Langenkamp's performance.

Need I go on? Wes Craven's best film in my opinion.

bought the nightmare collection and watched parts 1 - 3 so far. the original film is still great, of course it was more terrifying to me when i was younger, but some of the imagery is still subversively unsettling, starting with the opening montage of freddy lovably constructing his razor gloves. plus its use of freaky sounds and noises is one of the most clever in a horrorfilm, ever. and its such a well made little film that it puts todays lower budget horrormovies like the absymal Saw (unfortunately i saw that one too recently) to shame. the transitions between "reality" and the dream world are impeccable, my favorite scene in the film is when one of nancys class collegues recites a line from hamlet: "I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself a king of infinite space, were it not that I have bad dreams", and the next moment nancy finds herself in another fucked up dream. thats some seriously good writing. and there is of course that famous and highly complex shot where the camera slowly pans from children playing in a dream world to our teenage cast driving in a car in the real world. that craven guy surely was ambitious in his pre-Scream career. i will stop here instead of delving into the various themes explored in this film, and give it an A-. and who the fuck gave it an F?

I did and did so based on the fact that this movie is over 20 years old and just doesn't hold up well to me at all and borders on ridiculousness at times.. When I was 17 when this came out, I loved it but like with all people, some movie's just don't grow better over the course of time and this movie was one of them..

8/10 -> B

Shows age, but holds up pretty well for a cheap 80's flick. Surprisingly good effects. Freddy's my favorite horror villain ever. The movie has its weaknesses but they're a minor spoiler to an otherwise really good and enjoyable feature.

Hell, after seeing the trailer for Michael Bays attempt at Elm Street, he makes even the original which is YES, still vastly overrated look like an Oscar Winner..

B+

Wonderful concept and great atmosphere, but the acting really holds it back in places. Third best in the series.

Yeah. I'd give Dream Warriors a B+ and New Nightmare an A. Elm Street's the only series out of the big three where I can be entertained by every installment.

PS: I'll kill you.

I very much dislike A New Nightmare. Two kills in 90 minutes? The hell?

Three kills. Which is the same as Dream Child. Freddy only gets one kill in FVJ.

New Nightmare's about the story and atmosphere, not about Freddy chopping people up at every turn.

Yeah, well, Dream Child is not exactly a perfect comparison when talking quality, hehe. Also, NN was just kinda...boring.

He also has Friday the 13th among the Top 15 films of this year (out of 50 or so), I think. What do you think about that?

Not really, though. Especially not better than the first film, I'd say.

New Nightmare is a hilarious attempt at art from a man without an artistic bone in his body.

It is embarrassing.

The first film is let down by embarrassing actors. New Nightmare doesn't have this problem.

I'm confused.

Heather Langenkamp + Johnny Depp = EWWW

Heather Langenkamp + Bob Shaye + Wes Craven = The Royal Shakespeare Company
