Blow
BlowQuote: Blow is a 2001 biopic about the American cocaine smuggler George Jung, directed by Ted Demme (his final film). David McKenna and Nick Cassavetes adapted Bruce Porter's 1993 book Blow: How a Small Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medellín Cocaine Cartel and Lost It All for the screenplay. It is based on the real life stories of George Jung, Pablo Escobar, Carlos Lehder, and the Medellín Cartel. The film's title comes from a slang term for cocaine.

I'm about to get a heart attack because I am just agreeing with BKB here. This movie made my Top 10 of 2001 and stands as one of the best biopics I have ever seen. It is never dry, the story is throughly engaging and Depp plays his role simply perfectly. I loved many of his performances throughout his career. He was excellent and Oscar-worthy in Pirates of the Caribbean and in Edward Scissorhands, but his turn in Blow is definitely hi finest thus far. Essentially, this movie is about a big time drug dealer, a bad guy. Yet Depp's performance made me feel for him and feel sad for his character despite of who he is.
The story is your casual story of rise and fall, yet it is riveting and tremendously told. The supporting cast is just as great with Ray Liotta, Franka Potente and Penelope Cruz all delivering bona fide performances. I went in with no expectations and came out simply stunned. Great movie. Lord of War, released last year, is very similar, even though a bit worse and with its message going in a different direction.

Good Points
Bubbles with energy throughout
Some great lighthearted touches early on
Depp looks smashed most of the time anyways so this role was easy to play
Penelope Cruz can play one angry cokehead
Ray Liotta makes for a quiet but affecting father
It makes drugs look cool (bar the whole ruining you're life thing)
Bad Points
It makes drugs look cool
The ending just bummed me out.......what! I know its a true story but damnit I actually needed drugs afterwards to make me feel better again
Overall A

The movie makes drugs look cool? I don't know, I think it's pretty accurate, you can make a loooot of money in this business (or an indescribably huge amount like they did) but it's risky and doesn't usually have a very good ending.

Re: Blow
It features one of Johnny Depp's most underrated performances. He's far better here than, say, in his Oscar-nominated Finding Neverland turn.
