Sphere
SphereQuote: Sphere is a 1998 science fiction psychological thriller film, starring Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson. Sphere was based on the 1987 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton, author of Jurassic Park and The Lost World. The film was released in the United States on February 13, 1998. It's up there for one of the most boring films I've seen. C-

Ridiculously overblown and idiotic.
This would've been a STV release if not for the high-profile director and cast.

Anyone who has read the book knows how badly this adaptation was handeled, and I blame it squarely on four people. Those people are Kurt Wimmer, Barry Levinson, Paul Attanasio, and Steven Hauser. Wimmer adapted the film, but all four of them handeled the screenplay. Even though the film clocks in at 135 minutes, the film is rushed. With the film being rushed, that meant the complete absence of any character development whatsoever. And that's a shame too because the casting was actually very well done, although Jackson was too old to play Harry.
Also, the film has too many laugh out loud moments. Even though the film was made in 1997, the CGI effects, for back then, are awful which lead to many of these moments. Attack of the jellyfish anyone? That scene and many others are awful to watch. However, the film does get a couple of scenes correct, but i'm forgetting them at the time, that's how "well done" they were.
It's a shame that such a great book got handeled this poorly.

Its all right, it seemed to really try and be like the thing but underwater, it had a lot of potential and Schreiber and Hoffman especially are great, but I've seen a lot better.

I try to remain objective. I liked the movie as a movie. As an adaptation of its source, it is pretty terrible. Pretty much no one in the movie nailed his/her character from the novel. Too much was omitted, it feels too rushed.
However, just as a movie by itself, I find it really entertaining and interesting. I must note that I saw the film for the first time before reading the novel.

Re: Sphere
I really like some of the stuff in this (the set-up works pretty well, it's got an interesting mystery which is developed nicely) and, of course, Samuel L. Jackson pretty much makes the film better just by being there, but it's so stupid. There's a solid stretch of about fifteen minutes when the characters just run around mindlessly and nothing really happens. I think I've read the book, and I liked the ideas it brought up, but this film doesn't really adapt them well at all. If it had been more subtle (like, a lot more) I think I might've liked it.

Re: Sphere
Hm. I remember enjoying this. I also remember watching this New Years Day after staying up for about 36 hours, and watching while having a really deep religious conversation with two of my close friends. So my memory is a bit skewed and awry.

Re: Sphere
Watched this again recently. It actually builds quite nicely until an utterly stupid third act. I'd have to compare this to Event Horizon which was all violence and thrills and pure stupidity. They are a draw in the end, just because the atmosphere, cast and direction are so much better here. God the third act is terrible though, neither film can recreate the Alien ending they are so desperately trying to do. I don't know the know the novel, but it had to be better than this.

I don't remember much about this film. But I remember thinking it was rather boring. I probably should watch it again but that ain't going to happen.

Rewatch Assassins instead. Just because that's such an underrated Stallone film. That's a box office performance I'll never understand either. (Not really, there are a lot of great films released then that ate into it (Seven, Get Shorty, CopyCat)

Re: Sphere
I remember at the time seeing this and thinking it was an awful adaptation of the book. Jurassic Park: The Lost World and Congo were pretty bad adaptations too. But none reaches the atrociousness of the movie Eragon.
