Quote:
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a 2001 musical film based on the stage musical of the same title about a fictional rock band fronted by an East German transgender singer. The film was adapted and directed by John Cameron Mitchell, who also portrayed the title role. The music and lyrics are by Stephen Trask.

The musical has gathered a devoted cult following.

In 2001, the film won the Best Director and Audience Awards at the Sundance Film Festival as well as Best Directorial Debut from the National Board of Review, the Gotham Awards, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Mitchell received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor and the Premiere magazine "Performance of the Year Award".

Absolutely loved it.

Easily the best rock opera of the past 25 years. I especially enjoyed the ballad, The Origin of Love with it's funky animation. But the whole thing, from story, to soundtrack, to acting comes together into an outstanding movie musical. On my top ten list for 2001.

8 out of 5.

doesn't anyone else LOVE hedwig?

probably the most intelligent queer film (i don't really consider BM a queer film, as relevant as it is to expressing some aspects of queer identity - it's more gay than queer, though) since the crying game... or perhaps velvet goldmine (though its not particularly profound)

it's fucking aces. gets it right on so many levels, or so i feel as a queer.

that said, im seeing john cameron mitchell this valentine's day for a live performance of tracks from the film, then a live director's commentary as the film plays. hot. ill bring a sample of the audience's collective o-juice to share.

That makes me crazy too.

A brilliant film that no one ever bothered to see...

This was an awesome movie, and the songs and everything are really amazing also. I really didn't think I'd like it (I'm not into musicals or rock operas or whatever musical-related stuff) then I forgot it existed until I watched some old VHS recently and it had a preview for it.

I kind of want to see it live, now.

I saw this shortly after it hit DVD. I remember finding it "good" but not "great."

7/10 (B-)

I haven't seen this, but I'm seeing the musical with Neil Patrick Harris in June. I think I'm going to wait, though I definitely will check it out.

Post Re: Hedwig and the Angry Inch
I just watched this earlier today. I'm seeing the musical on Thursday but my friend said it would help seeing the movie first with some things that happen, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I thought it was fantastic. John Cameron Mitchell was perfect as Hedwig. I wish I was old enough to have seen the show off-Broadway while he was in it, that would have been something to see. I also really loved Andrea Martin in it too. The only thing keeping it from a perfect grade for me was the ending. It felt a bit out there and like it was out of a different movie. I don't think I totally grasped what it was trying to say. Hopefully that part of it will be better a second time but like I said, I absolutely loved it. Beautiful, moving, hilarious. Loved it.
