Great indie film from Down Under. Hugo Weaving delivers one of the best performances of his career, and his youthful co-star (Tom Russell) is fantastic, too. It is one of the most mature and nuanced child performances in ages. The film tells the story of a complicated, volatile father with a long criminal record who goes on the run with his son after a violent encounter which comes into focus over the course of the film. Australia's deserts and rural hillsides photograph well as always, and the film in general is engaging and moving. Very, very grim, but satisfying.
