Quote:
Mighty Joe Young is a 1998 family film starring Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron and directed by Ron Underwood, most known for directing City Slickers. It is based on the 1949 film of the same name. In this version, the ape is much larger than in the original.

It is entertaining for a kids' movie and the effects are surprisingly great, but in the end it is too formulaic, too generic and too predictable to be a really good movie, so it remains a decent entertainer for the family. Not more, not less. Charlize Theron has been better many many times and the movie seriously rips off way too much of King Kong, even though it tries to come across as a homage.

Is this thread for the 1949 original or the 1998 remake?

(Both are great films, but the original is an all-time classic!)

Not bad for what it was. Charlize Theron was good, considering she had to play opposite a gorilla.
