Re: Silence of the Lambs
I prefer the Clerks 2 rendition of "Would you fuck me? I'd fuck me. I'd fuck me hard," but I guess Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster are kinda amazing.

Re: Silence of the Lambs
I don't think it's worthy of the acclaim really. It's a slow-burning memorable and occasionally haunting serial-killer flick, but not that much more. Sure, Hopkin's performance and construction of the character deserve a place in villain hall of fame. It's subtle, ambiguous, intelligent, and even clever which adds up to one of the most memorable and haunting performances of that kind. Unfortunately that description does not fit the film as a whole. There are some great scenes, a few cases of brilliant framing and shots that really stick out. Outside of a few bits of witty dialogue here and there though the film really boils down to: any scene with Lector and Clarice the escape scene the final scene in the basement.
Aside from that the rest can essentially be thrown away. The crime-lab detective stuff may have been interesting in '91, but in a time riddled with cop dramas on every tv channel it doesn't hold up. On the whole I like the movie for above-mentioned reasons but it's not a greatest ever thriller master-piece imo. I'd say it's about equal with Se7en which also has a status it's mostly unworthy of.

What you don't realize is that John the Savage is being serious.

I haven't seen nearly enough films from before 1940, but I've seen a few of the absolute big ones--M, for example, and a few of Chaplin's most enduring titles.

That more or less applies to me as well, I've seen some 30s movies but am woefully ignorant of the silent era. Do you agree with my assessment of M, unoriginal and faux-snobby as it may be? Depending on the strictness of the definition of "thriller" other acceptable answers would be: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081505/http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477348/http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048261/

The Night of the Hunter is the correct answer.

Re: The Silence of the Lambs
Haha it's funny that I was the last person who posted in this thread and I just watched this for the first time three years later. Finally after all these years I can stop saying that I've never seen this movie. :p It's hard to grade it seeing it for the first time in 2014. There have been so many copies of the film that it doesn't exactly feel fresh or shocking anymore like I'm sure it did in 1991. What truly sets this apart from the copy cats is the truly intense sequences. The scene where Lector escapes and the scene where Clarice finds Buffalo Bill are really masterful sequences and I was 100% on the edge of my seat during both of them. I wasn't won over right away, I did feel that it was pretty slow in the beginning but it kept picking up as it went on and the performances here are fantastic. Glad I finally watched it. A-
