A decent movie, I guess. Kate Winslet is good. Without her, I'm not sure we'd even be talking about the movie, especially as a BP nominee. I'm not rooting for her to win the Oscar. I'm all for a Winslet win, but not for The Reader. I'm not happy this stole a BP nod from more deserving films (and no, not just TDK, but WALL-E and especially The Wrestler), but I'm not going to cry about it.

Grade: C+

Oscar Rankings
1. Slumdog A-
2. Frost/Nixon B+
3. Milk B+
4. The Reader C+
-Benjamin Button ?

Winslett is....un-impressive. She's not bad, hell she was pretty convincing and rather enticing all throughout. However just like slumdog millionaire, she had just received too much hype for her own good. I actually thought Fiennes was the best part of the film and believe him worthy a best supporting actor nom. However David Kross was not very impressive, the writing worked only modestly, and did not give us any chance to really become acclimated with the romance. Then the rest of the movie is people being angry and dwelling in grief, which is done well, but doesn't work because we are never made to understand WHY they are grieving and therefore can't relate. The directing was pretty good when it wasn't focusing on tactless and disjointed nudity and sex. All in all sexual chemistry is the only emotion that is really shared between Berg and Schmitz, which reduces this to being a strange and un-connectable film with good moments and nothing else.
6/10

What a remarkably kind review. I revise:
3/10

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

I still hate this movie. :p And Kate Winslet won the Oscar for the wrong movie. This stupid thing pissed me off so much. ;)

Yeah, she was supposed to win for Eternal Sunshine!

This is such a brilliant story. The way it builds and the way it starts without any knowledge of her past, its perspective urges an objective point of view, or at least a favourable subjective one. Kate Winslet is merely satisfactory (her frail appearance was not matched by her mannerisms, and this annoyed me) but I thought David Kross and Ralph Fiennes (young and old Michael) were superb.

I have a feeling I saw this film before. Some scenes in the flat plus the ending where he visits the Jew really feel familiar.
