 Re: The Mist
THE MIST - 7/10 ( B )
It was very solid, but after the great reviews I was expecting to love it. It wasn't as gripping as it should have been, and I was hoping for the ending to come along and blow me away, making the movie great, but while it was ballsy I can't say it was mind-blowing on the level I was expecting.
At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the ending, though I didn't hate it. But after thinking about it I don't like it. I found it to be kind of sudden and honestly, it wasn't very believable. There are too many flaws that come with the ending. And it's obvious many are going to hate this movie because of the ending. I'm all for ballsy, "out there" endings, but this just came off as ridiculous. And that's coming from someone who had no problem with the finale of BUG, which was also a better movie.
Overall, it was very good, but a letdown compared to what I was expecting.

 Re: The Mist
This is one of the most overrated films of the year, and it's certainly not one of the best horrors of any timeframe. The creature designs are cool, and I guess the acting is fine enough, but the whole thing looks really shoddily put together. Aside from that great, atmospheric opening shot (loved the nod to The Thing), the camera work is really amateurish and made-for-TV (not surprising, considering they used a TV crew). Darabont should have either gone for a really raw, documentary feel (a la Cloverfield) or a painterly, stylish look, not some half-hearted hybrid. Plus the special effects are pretty bad.
It also doesn't help that the characterizations are terribly one-note and not convincing at all. Instead of real people, we're stuck with some stock stereotypes and unbelievable characters, so there's no sense of emotion when any of them die. Marcia Gay Harden couldn't have been any more one-sided if she tried. And the film's message is hammered home with such force that I'm surprised they didn't start invoking Lord of the Flies near the end.
I spoiled myself on the ending, so it really didn't shock me like it should (or could) have, but I really didn't find it effective regardless. It's rushed, it's silly, and it turns borderline hilarious with Thomas Jane's anguished screams. Best horror ending, I think not.
Save your time (and money) and go watch The Shining again.

 Re: The Mist
Could it have better effects? Sure, but that isn't the focus of the film.
Stereotypical characters? Yes, but I think worked well and Harden's character evoked plenty of emotion out of the audience I saw it with.
Weren't they at Lord of the Flies level already after they killed the solider?
I liked the ending and didn't mind the screaming but it did seemed rushed. Maybe they didn't need to have the army roll right through 30 seconds after the incident.

I think not knowing the ending beforehand is gonna kill your experience watching this film. I showed this film to a bunch of friends at school and all of them thought it was completely average (minus a few cool scenes) until the end, and it changed their mind completely.

A film should be about more than its twist ending, and changing your mind completely on the film because it had a shocking finish is a silly way of judging it. If I hadn't spoiled myself, I doubt I would've liked it any better. The problems with story and characters and visuals would still be there, and I would've have overlooked them just because the ending surprised me.

I didn't know the ending beforehand, but it didn't blow me away as much as it did to others here. It was cool and ironic, yes, but it wasn't the main reason why I liked this movies. I didn't love it, but I liked it quite a bit. It was the entire atmosphere and mood created here as well as the nifty mosnter designs and a fair share of suspense.

 Re: The Mist
Finally saw this, I was pleasently surprise, sure its not Darabont's best, but when it comes to King adaptations he is the man.
This washed out the bast taste of the last King adaptation i saw, Dreamcatcher.

 Re: The Mist
Just..... not a good movie. At all. The lack of a musical score really focused my attention on the shitty acting and dialogue, and lazy-as-hell characterization. Furthermore, many of the action sequences were awkwardly handled, severely lessening any potentially thrilling impact. I wasn't really scared at any point, and I'm usually a nervous wreck during scary movies.
The ending might have worked for me, maybe, if it didn't seem wholly unbelievable and out of place. The characters made a huge deal of getting out and trying to survive, and the INSTANT they're out of gas, everyone unanimously agrees to off themselves rather than waiting it out or trying to make it further.
Pretty crappy movie, seemed like an upgraded made-for-TV creature-feature with "social commentary."
C- or so.

This didn't held up too well on a second viewing. Especially the ending lost much of it's impact. B+
